The Modern Geisha officially began in March 2024, born out of a desire to merge traditional values with a modern approach to holistic healing. As a first-generation Filipino-American, I grew up in a household where the importance of serving the community without expecting anything in return was deeply instilled in me. This value guided much of my life, but it also led to a sense of imbalance—always giving, rarely receiving.
My academic journey began with a degree in kinesiology, with the goal of becoming a physical therapist. However, after my first experiences in the field, I realized it wasn’t fulfilling. I ventured into various career paths—chiropractic assistant, personal trainer, bartender/server, and even CAD design—but none brought the satisfaction I was seeking. What remained constant throughout these roles was my natural inclination to advise others and advocate for holistic health.
The name “Geisha” symbolizes this fusion. Traditionally, a Geisha is a skilled artist, often trained in music, dance, and conversation, serving as both an entertainer and a caretaker of culture. My art is the skill I’ve cultivated in guiding others, using tools like tarot and sound bowls to offer a holistic approach to well-being. The Modern Geisha is my way of honoring the old while embracing the new, serving others on my terms and within my own boundaries.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to creating The Modern Geisha has been far from smooth. Like any meaningful path, it’s been filled with twists, turns, and challenges that tested my resolve. One of the biggest struggles was breaking away from the expectations set by my traditional upbringing. As a first-generation Filipino-American, the pressure to pursue a stable and conventional career like nursing was immense. Choosing to follow my passion for holistic healing meant stepping into the unknown, which was both exciting and terrifying.
Another challenge was finding my place in a world that often undervalues the intangible—intuition, wisdom, and spiritual healing. I spent years in various fields, from physical therapy to bartending, feeling unfulfilled because my true gifts were overlooked or taken for granted. It was difficult to break free from roles that didn’t align with my spirit and to carve out a space where I could use my talents authentically.
Building The Modern Geisha also required a lot of inner work. I had to overcome self-doubt, set firm boundaries, and learn to value my worth. It was a struggle to shift from a mindset of giving without expecting anything in return to one where I recognized that my energy and skills deserved fair exchange. I am also very grateful for my support system of loved ones who have supported me through this journey.
Financial stability was another hurdle. Starting a business, especially one rooted in holistic practices, required an investment of time, money, and effort without immediate returns. There were moments of uncertainty where I questioned whether I had made the right choice.
Despite these struggles, each challenge has been a lesson that shaped The Modern Geisha into what it is today—a sanctuary for those seeking balance, healing, and empowerment. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been deeply rewarding, and I’m grateful for every step of the journey.
