Life & Work with Kyesha Wilson of Third Ward Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyesha Wilson

Hi Kyesha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?

I’ve always had a passion for hair, especially braids and protective styles, ever since I was young. Growing up, my close friends and family were talented braiders who always styled my hair. When middle school hit, appearance became a big deal for me and my classmates. We’d be in the locker room after practice, trying everything to fix our hair crises! That’s when I started watching YouTube videos on hair care and styling. I began redoing my own braids and even braiding classmates’ hair during school breaks.

By the time I hit high school, I was styling my friends’ hair at a reasonable price. It didn’t take long for me to realize I could turn this passion into a business. By then, I had a solid clientele in my hometown, and I was booked and busy until I left for college in Houston, Texas. In Houston, I used the same skills and practices I learned growing up to build my business, Hair x Kyesha. I focused on marketing and honed my business skills while studying business marketing in school.

Today, I absolutely love what I do. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of transforming my clients and seeing their smiles when I finish a style. I cherish the conversations I have with each client and the trust they place in me. It’s incredibly rewarding to make people feel beautiful and comfortable, and I’m grateful to be able to do what I love every single day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Navigating the ups and downs of my entrepreneurial journey has been filled with challenges and lessons, especially in understanding and meeting client needs. Learning to trust my business was a significant hurdle. Some days were incredibly fulfilling, while others were slow and challenging. Understanding the seasonal nature of demand in my industry was particularly tough. There were moments of discouragement when business wasn’t as steady as I hoped, which is common for service providers. However, these experiences taught me resilience and the importance of having faith in my abilities.

I quickly realized that to boost demand during slower periods, I needed to ramp up my marketing efforts. This realization transformed my approach, emphasizing strategic marketing to drive business growth and client engagement. Each challenge has shaped me into a more adaptable and determined entrepreneur, reinforcing my passion for hairstyling and commitment to delivering exceptional service through Hair x Kyesha.

Absolutely! I owe a tremendous amount of credit to several individuals who have been instrumental in the success of Hair x Kyesha. My mother has been my biggest supporter from day one, cheering me on through every challenge and triumph in my business journey. She’s been my rock, offering guidance and encouragement that has been invaluable.

My grandmother has also been a profound inspiration. As a successful entrepreneur herself, she’s shown me what it means to be a confident black woman in business. Her example and wisdom have guided me in navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship and striving for excellence.

Growing up in my G-mama’s hair salon was transformative. It instilled in me a deep love for hairstyling and the salon environment, which laid the foundation for Hair x Kyesha. Their influence shaped my passion and commitment to delivering exceptional service.

I also want to recognize all the stylists I’ve came in contact with ,whose perspective and encouragement pushed me to showcase my talents beyond my community. Their mentorship opened doors and expanded my horizons in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Furthermore, my friends and siblings have been unwavering in their support, always promoting my business and bringing in new clients. Their belief in me has been a driving force behind Hair x Kyesha’s growth and success.
