Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Bowers.
Hi Marcus, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started learning early at home, even before grade school. My mother was my first teacher. She would create assignments for us on notebook paper — math problems, spelling words, writing exercises — and quiz us regularly. We even had spelling bee contests at home. Education was always pushed in our household, and I truly believe that foundation is what made me fall in love with learning.
Growing up as the youngest of six, we didn’t have much, but we had determination. I became the first person in my family to graduate from college. Before college, I joined the U.S. Navy and served in Naval Special Operations as a Special Warfare Combatant Crewman. During my military career, I traveled around the world to places like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. That experience gave me discipline, perspective, and the confidence to head back to Asia as an entrepreneur, China to be exact, to negotiate with suppliers face to face in person, versus just online.
After returning home, I took advantage of my educational benefits and pursued multiple career paths. School was pretty much taken care of with the GI Bill. I started cashing in on all the benefits of serving in the Navy immediately. I became an engineer, electrician, HVAC technician, and even earned my teacher certification because I originally wanted to teach, coach, or be an administrator on somebodies campus and mentor young people. Eventually, my entrepreneurial journey led me to collab with non-profits and organizations like The GUnity Foundation, where the foci is helping underserved and low-income communities.
I attended the University of Houston–Downtown and pursued my business degree. Shortly after graduating, I called a few friends, and together we established She’s Happy Hair in 2012. It’s now one of the most recognized virgin hair brands in the country. From the trunk of the car, we went from hustling to starting, running, growing, scaling, expanding a business to multiple cities and states, including Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Oklahoma, Alabama, and beyond.
Since COVID, I’ve continued expanding into new industries and opportunities. I ventured into the restaurant business with Kolache Shack in Colorado Springs and explored e-commerce further with Lyfelax Global, which introduced one of America’s first slipper subscription concepts. My journey has always been about innovation, taking risks, and understanding that business has no limits when paired with vision, education, and execution.
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that success is bigger than money. It’s about adaptability, leadership, and the willingness to keep learning. I’ve always told people: “Whatever you do, do it online too.” Today, I also tell people, “Whatever you do, use AI too.” The world changes fast, and the people willing to evolve with technology and education will always have an advantage.
Some principles I live by are:
• “Don’t wait til you graduate, be it now”
• “Anybody can get money, but you’ve got to be educated to keep it.”
• “Anything you do in one city, you can do in another.”
• “The more you read, the more money you make.”
• “Knowledge is power. The implementation of knowledge is more powerful. But the most powerful thing you can do is teach the knowledge that worked for you.”
At the end of the day, my story is about growth, resilience, education, service, entrepreneurship, and believing that no matter where you come from, you can build something impactful that reaches people all over the world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but honestly, I probably wouldn’t choose another route even if I had the opportunity. I’ve learned to #TrustTheProcess — the process of learning, growing, evolving, and showing people what’s possible when you actually apply the knowledge you gain over time.
I grew up off MLK Blvd in Houston, Tx. I would take 3-4 buses just to visit Granny or to seek opportunities. There were seasons where I had to balance school, work, business, and family all at once while trying to build something meaningful from the ground up. CLOCK OUT TO CLOCK-IN FOR YOURSELF Nothing was handed to me. A lot of the lessons came through experience, sacrifice, pressure, and perseverance. It’s a #BetterThanYesterday mindset.
One thing I learned early is that you can trust education if you’re pursuing the right journey. Many folks say “College is a scam” but i got rich as soon as I graduated from The University of Houston-Downtown. I got mentally rich first and financially rich second. Knowledge stays with you. The education, discipline, and experiences you earn can never be taken away from you, but relationships and business dynamics can shift as success grows.
When we first started She’s Happy Hair, there were no titles, egos, or politics involved. From 2012 to around 2018, we were simply a group of people working together, building together, and winning together as a team. It felt organic, exciting, and team-oriented.
As the company grew, so did the pressure, responsibilities, and differences in vision. At some point, the culture shifted from a team of leaders to an individual wanting to lead the entire team. That’s when things became more difficult and with no guardrails or expense request forms to manage the spending we actually went from 9 stores across the U.S to just 4 stores in Texas. The journey taught me that scaling a business is not just about growth and revenue — it’s also about realignment, voting systems, communication, transparency, trust, and protecting the vision.
But through every challenge, I’ve continued to grow. The struggles taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of staying grounded in purpose. Entrepreneurship isn’t just about making money; it’s about becoming someone strong enough to handle the weight of success, setbacks, legal fees, and everything in between, which may include being tased by the local police even though you’re a tax-paying citizen.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a Globalpreneur not an entrepreneur. A Globalpreneur is someone who entrepreneurs everywhere and does entrepreneurial things not just in their city or state, but across the world, both on Earth and online too.
Education has always been a major part of my story. I was in honor classes and advanced placement programs throughout grade school. Right after graduating high school, I joined the United States Navy just two weeks later. I was actually in Great Lakes, Chicago in A-school during 9/11 — when terrorists flew airplanes into the World Trade Center towers. That moment changed the world, and it changed the atmosphere of military service forever.
During my time in the Navy, I served in Naval Special Operations as a Special Warfare Combatant Crewman. I traveled across the world on missions, sometimes in the middle of the ocean, sometimes on some of the most remote islands on Earth, wearing camouflage paint on my face and operating in high-pressure environments. The military gave me discipline, leadership, resilience, and a global perspective on life.
After leaving the Navy, I took advantage of the GI Bill and went to school because, honestly, they paid for it — and I wanted to learn everything I could. Shout out to the GI Bill. I earned multiple degrees and certifications while continuing to explore different paths in life and the last degree I earned was Business Administration from UHD.
A lot of people know me from building She’s Happy Hair into one of the most recognized virgin hair brands in the country, but many people don’t know before i was slanging hair I was slanging jokes. I’m also a comedian and will be stepping back on stage to bring the funny.
Today, I’m heavily focused on AI, digital education, and teaching people how to make money on and offline. Whether it’s B2C products, retail, e-commerce, branding, automation, or customer data strategies, I love helping people understand how to scale ideas beyond one location or one platform. Some people might call me a retail guru, but I really just see myself as someone committed to learning, implementing, and teaching others how to grow in today’s digital world.
One thing I’ve always believed is: “Whatever you do, do it online too.” And now, I add this: “Whatever you do, use AI too.” The future belongs to the people willing to adapt, learn, and move with the times.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that knowledge alone isn’t enough — implementation is everything. A lot of people go to college to learn how to get a good job, but I believe education should also teach you how to create good jobs too. A degree isn’t the finish line; it’s a license to keep going and learning The world is offering world-class training every single day through experience, technology, and life itself. Don’t skip class. There’s world-class education happening around us every day on and offline don’t get left behind, and don’t skip class.
