Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Hogg
Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I suppose I have always been a “creative”. Both my Father and Grandmother were talented artists, so it always came natural to want to create.
Growing I was influenced by not only the greats like Van Gogh and Warhol but by local mural and graffiti artists.
Music and fashion have always been a passion of mine. Being a 90s kid, the grunge and Riot Girl movement were in full effect, and still can’t resist a band shirt and doc martens!
My sister and I bought most of our clothes second hand and even raided Grandpa’s polyester shirts.
I learned how to quilt as a child, so doing alterations was always an easy way to make any piece unique.
I believe in dressing bold and making a statement!
Much like my fashion inspiration, I find that my jewelry come about in the same way. Finding fun pieces and making it into wearable art.
Most of my materials are handmade, repurposed or vintage whenever possible.
During a chance incounter, I met a London musician and became Instagram friends. Five years later we are collaborating on band merchandise as well as concert photography. Check out The Oliver Shaw Experience!
Although i am still a very small operation, I am proud to announce that on my 40th birthday i received my business license! I hope to open a store front one day, but in the meantime I’m enjoying vendor fairs and creating for open minded people.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Art can be extremely objective and showing the world what you have created can be intimidating at times.
My expectations have been exceeded each time I have shown my work.
I am beyond greatful for the support Houston has shown me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I pride myself in being a “jack of all trade, master of none”.
My favorite art form is jewelry making. I use upcycled materials, shop small business and use vintage.
I am best known for using bisque or porcelain doll parts, I love Victorian brooches, ornate frames, Pop art and anything with a tiny creature.
Some of my other works include detailed bead work, nature inspired decor and rock fashion.
Photography include street art, concerts, travel and architecture.
