Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Lucena.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am an organized person, and it made my life much easier. I have always tried to find ways to simplify and optimize my life at home. And how to made the home chores to be less overwhelming.
I had helped friends pack, move, unpack, organize their homes and routines, and I have always had fun doing it. So one of my friends said I should work organizing for people. First, I was curious about it because I did not know that people worked as professional organizers. So I started learning about organization, researching, and reading lots of books, and then I decided to get professional training too; I took some courses. And after that, I started working organizing for friends, and friends of friends, always getting recommendations by word of mouth.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. Right after I had finished my training, Covid started. I was ready to organize people’s houses, and with the pandemic, I had to postpone it.
During Covid, everybody was scared of having people at your house, for safety reasons, so it was pretty hard to get new clients. For my work, I need people to trust and know me to work inside their houses.
Usually, I work by clients’ recommendations, that recommend me to their friends and acquaintances, so know they can trust me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I help people to get organized so they can spend time doing things that matter to them. I help to organize closets, pantries, playrooms, and kitchens, etc., everywhere they have clutter and-or they want or need to have better use of that space. I am proud when I finish a job, the client is happy and enjoying their organized house. Or when they ask me to come back and organize other areas of theirs houses.
Usually, people are scared of us, professional organizers. Some clients have the wrong idea that they will need to become minimalists if they hire a professional organizer. I like to give my clients options, for example, they do not need to buy expensive containers to have an organized pantry, or get rid of all their clothes and shoes to have an organized closet. I try to find the best option for every client, respecting their wishes. Also, I give my clients options of what they want. They do not need to organize the whole house at once or at all. Making my clients happy and satisfied is very important to me and my work.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Difference between cleaning and organizing.
Cleaning: mopping, sweeping, doing laundry, doing dishes, vacuuming, taking out trash, scrubbing sinks
Organizing: organizing rooms, closets, pantry, kitchen, etc., decide what to keep, donate, give or toss, decide how to utilize and store items, optimize closet spaces, pack and unpack moving, create routines and systems to simplify daily life
