Life & Work with MyKala Toler

Today we’d like to introduce you to MyKala Toler.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been obsessed with the big makeup brands like MAC, Two Faced, & More Recently Mary Kay (believe it or not their products are actually a hidden gem.) So once day my cousin (Naye) did my makeup & when I tell you I was fascinated I couldn’t believe I was looking at myself. I mean I still looked like me but more sophisticated. From there I started watching YouTube, and gaining all the knowledge I could on how to do makeup. I consider myself a brow master because I feel like the eyebrows is what I perfected 1st, and that’s what people always want/know me for is eyebrows, everything else just fell in place, lol I remember when I 1st tried to contour my face I said “ugh I look like a man” because I used too much contour, & from there I just keep practicing, & trying new techniques. Almost everything I learned I learned from YouTube, I never took a class or anything, I’m literally a self taught MUA. I stepped out on faith because I’m not really a people person but I knew in order to do what I was trying to do I needed to invite new people into my circle, so I started going places & giving out my business cards. I even started a Facebook ad & from there my clientele skyrocketed. I started doing makeup for fashion shows, photo shoots & I even did a few weddings. It’s just been up ever since, & now I’ve recently added eyelash extensions to my services so I’ve came a long way from the girl who used to just swipe on one shimmer eyeshadow, some mascara & lipgloss.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been easy at all & I can’t lie I felt discouraged many of times. Within the past 4 years, I’ve moved A LOT, so that put a major strain on business because I didn’t know anyone. I was just getting business by word of mouth & sometimes you need more than that because people are used to who they’re used to, so they don’t want to try a new person. But anytime I’ve been referred to someone & they actually had service done by me, they love the outcome & have came back or referred someone else. I’m thankful for those clients who have been with me since the beginning because without them I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do Makeup & Eyelash Extentions, but I’m known most for makeup, I’m proud of my hygienic approach with doing makeup because believe it or not makeup artists do not be clean about their business. I seen a highly known makeup artist in Miami do makeup on two of my friends & when I tell you sis did not clean her brushes or station before she switched clients. I was appalled & honestly disgusted. From there I knew I had to take my cleanliness to the next level. My style of makeup sets me apart from most, I feel like I do more “ad” like makeup, when I do a face, I try to make sure that person still looks like themselves, something you would see in a target ad or something like that you know sometimes people get their makeup done & you can’t really recognize them, & if you don’t believe me try the iPhone trick if the phone doesn’t unlock, you don’t look like yourself. LMAO but I’m not going to do your makeup like that. I’m simply here to enhance your natural beauty. I’m also known for being flexible, I’m mobile because I find it’s easier for the clients if you can just come to them.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Being Dynamic because I understand things happen so I look at everything with an optimistic approach.
