Life & Work with Nadine Berns of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadine Berns.

Hi Nadine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
HI! Yes, I would love to. Professionally, I started back in 2014. Expectations and trends were a lot different a decade ago and I definitely didn’t know my style, my why or what I wanted to photograph as far as niches go. I just know that working minimum wage at a bunch of different jobs doing random things while going to school was not what I was passionate about. I have always loved photography from a young age, my dad always encouraged me since he always had a camera in hand. But it was never a career possibility in my mind. The summer I was home from college I remember someone reaching out to me to do a $50 portrait session for one hour while I was working some minimum job I hated (probably sweet tomatoes) and it blew my mind that this could be a possibility. Making money and doing something I enjoy!?!? Mind boggling. Two years late in the year 2016, I photographed my first wedding and I found my passion with the hobby I have always loved. Weddings. Weddings were filled with an array of emotions, always different, no couple quite like the last and a place for me to almost take a step back and photograph the day as it is and be apart of memories we want to cling to. Tangible heirlooms we flipped through at our grandparents house is what I was getting to create and it was so surreal getting to be apart of that. Now, in 2025, I’ve made a lot of mistakes trying to figure out who I am as an artist and my style. I’m finally excited to step into this more confident version of who I am today, a documentarian wedding photographer, capturing couple’s wedding day’s as it is, without the performance and really just focus on documenting the moments rather than a posed portrait session. I think without the mistakes and small wins I made along the way I wouldn’t be the person I am today as an artist and person. I’m grateful for this little pre-teen business making me a better version of me, a better photographer, and letting me see the world of possibilities through a viewfinder.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. Figuring out algorithms is hard. Being perceived on social media when your mental health is not in a good place. Not having a fixed income can be difficult especially when it’s a bad year. Sometimes being a business owner sucks and you will do the wrong thing from time to time and you just have to take accountability or fix whatever mistake you made and keep going. It’s worth it if you have the passion and tenacity to get back up.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a documentary wedding photographer in Houston, Texas that photographs on a mix of film and digital. Work wise, I am really proud of the work I’ve created this year at weddings and the couples who have booked me – it seems like what I’m putting out there is resonating with like minded people and that’s really cool to see and experience. As far as setting myself apart from others, let’s be real, this is a very saturated market full of talented people. I think what sets me apart is me – my personality. If you love my work and you love my personality, then we would be a great fit in the sea of amazing artists.

What are your plans for the future?
Right now, I am working on my rebrand. I want to focus on being more intentional with my time, work slower and continue to build friendships in the community I am in. I don’t have any big changes right now.
