Life & Work with Neil Gallagher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neil Gallagher.

Neil Gallagher

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started this project in 2008 to learn more about my grandfather’s service during WWII. Like many of their generation, they did not discuss their time in the service. When they passed, their stories were lost forever. I began speaking to veterans at my local American Legion. Eventually, I began interviewing these veterans, and today, I have interviewed over 150 World War Two, Korea, and Vietnam War veterans.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Finding veterans has become much more complicated since I began this project. With the declining WWII and Korean War generations, I have been racing against the clock to record their stories before they are lost forever. If anyone knows a veteran willing to be interviewed, we would love to hear from you!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I run a nonprofit called Preserving the Stories. Through this project, I interview WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans on their military service. I am honored to travel around the country to record their stories.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
This project is self-funded, and I have invested a substantial amount of money into financing it. This has been the greatest risk with this project, but I believe it is a small price to pay for preserving this history.
