Life & Work with Raquel De Lemos of Clear Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel De Lemos.

Hi Raquel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is complex with many uncomfortable moments, but the short version – a moment of desperation has evolved into multiple avenues for me to flex my creative talents in a way that benefits me financially.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has definitely been a rocky one. As someone who self-publishes romance, I’ve come to find out – at least for me – it’s difficult to write about love when your own love-life is in shambles. Postpartum depression, anxiety, PTSD, I’ve suffered from them all at some point, and unfortunately, it negatively impacted my writing career. I’ve struggled with a severe bout of writer’s block, which forced me to get real with myself and ask the hard questions. In the end, I realized the fictional world and characters I’d created, the situations and challenges I set for them to overcome, were essentially my needs and wants, struggles and pain manifested on paper. And if you’re familiar with my work, it’s not always an easy read.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m truly grateful and lucky to be a person who operates from both sides of the brain. Professionally, I’m an accountant – a true numbers cruncher. But I’m also a creative person. I’ve been reading and writing books and short stories for as long as I can remember. When I decided to turn my creative talents into money-making endeavors, I started out as an SEO copywriter, freelancing on gig marketplaces. Now, I’ve created an ecommerce site, dfycontentbundles.com, that provides complete content packages and digital marketing content bundles for small businesses and emerging brands.

The stories I used to write ushered me into the world of self-publishing. As an indie author, I’ve self-published dark romance and erotica under a pen name. It also led to Big Black Chapters, a writers collective that provides marketing support and promotional assistance to indie authors of color.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The support from other strong, driven women have played a big role in my success. They’ve helped me personally and professionally.
