Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Macias.
Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you Voyage Houston, for this opportunity to share my story. I have always had a passion for art. I love every form of it, paintings, crafts, poetry, literature and of course, film. Art motivated me to dive into digital media and I gravitated to video and film production. Early on in my career, I worked at a local production company doing multimedia projects, including motion graphics, 3D animation, and interactive development. After working there for 16 years, it was time to venture out on my own. I have freelanced for almost two years and hope to form a small production company in the near future. When I’m not producing commercial work, I like to spend my time working on short films. I have made some short documentaries highlighting local creative artists. Recently, I worked as Director of Photography for a short film called “The Last Drop: Alejandro’s Story.” It had its first showing in February at the Golden State Film Festival in Los Angeles, CA and now at the Palm Beach International Film Festival. I’m working on finishing up another short documentary this year that I’m producing. My passion for telling visual stories also gets embedded into my commercial work. There is always a story to tell!!! Whether it’s a product or a non-profit organization, I try to find its identity and share the story that resonates with its audience.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been challenging, being that I worked at the same production company for so many years, my network was nonexistent. Now I’m pushing hard to get out and network and feel I have made important connections. I still have a long way to go, but I’m staying positive and trying to enjoy meeting great Houstonians.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love working on personal film projects; I feel total control over how I want to tell a story. Currently doing short films but hope to one day shoot an indie film. I also enjoy woodwork, like building desks and tables in the garage. Another passion of mine is photography. When I travel, I always take my camera to capture some street photography and aerial shots with my drone.
What were you like growing up?
Born and raised in Houston. I grew up in the Heights/Shady Acres area. We moved around a lot but always stayed in the same area. I was a shy kid but marched to my own beat, I was always doing my own thing. I had a significant interest in art, and I would do sketches of lowrider cars and loved doing crafts. This passion stayed with me, and after High school, I attended the Art Institute of Houston. I learned to do motion graphics, video production, and interactive development. Now I integrate these various skills into my work and personal projects.
