Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronnie Hughes.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Being bi-polar is a huge part of my story. Every day I overcome challenges which is a huge victory each and every day. Bi-polar drives my creativity which I use to my advantage when working behind the cameras. I took my two passions and intertwined them into an accomplished career that I’m still building. Those two passions are sports and music.
My love for the hip-hop culture in Houston goes back to the late 80s and has only grown stronger over the years. I’ve been blessed to cover events put on by Paul Wall, Donnie Houston and many others in the Houston area. Covering the Super Bowl in Houston and working the red carpet at the Rolling Stone Super Bowl party is probably one of my favorite memories.
Working with artists such as Max Flinn and Julia Cole who performed during the festivities at Discovery Green during the week leading up the Super Bowl. I even did some work with Jamele Hill and Michael Smith during that week. I was there with boxing champion and Houston nativeJermell Charlo prior to his first big payout. I’ve been published nationally more than a thousand times as a journalist and photographer.
I started HYDE which stands for Hughes Your Daddy Entertainment in 2019 as I continue to grow my business more towards the hip-hop industry. I’ve even done a music video for E3 the son of Eazy-E which was really cool to be around someone who’s father was a pioneer of the West Coast music scene. I shot a film here in Houston for him and then shot some videos out in California back in 2017. I feel alive behind the camera and have always found a way to find beauty in every shot I take. I’m my best self when I’m in those moments and it’s one thing nobody will be able to take away from me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge and I believe it rings true for every creative type, has been finding my place in the industries I work in. It was building a list of clients not just locally, but on a national level.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My vision and the angles I shoot from I think set me apart. I will literally lay in the dirt or mud to get a good shot. My specialty is photography and video editing. I’m known for my background around the hip-hop industry, but more well known for my sports coverage over the past decade which has taken me to countless high school state championship games, Super Bowl, Cotton Bowl, LSU baseball and a long list of events. Working VYPE Magazine was a huge step for me allowing me to showcase my work across their platform which included 6 magazine covers and numerous photoshoots.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Favorite childhood memory was probably spending time with my grandmother, Allie Sue Hathaway, who taught me all about the world and being true to myself. She always told me, not to water myself down to fit what narrative the world thinks I should be.
