Life & Work with Ruby Haro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Haro.

Hi Ruby, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a young child, I loved playing doctor. By the age of 15, I volunteered at several hospitals, including St. Luke’s Hospital, Children’s Shriners Hospital, and Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital. In my senior year of high school, I was offered a job at St. Luke’s Hospital. The following summer, I also worked at a retail store, which sparked my interest into the fashion industry. Upon graduating from AI Miami International University, I pursued the fashion world and moved to New York. After a few years in New York, I relocated back home to Houston and opened a small clothing store. Eventually, I decided to follow my other passion into the medical field.

In 2013, I started working for a plastic surgeon, Dr. Sam Sukkar. I worked my way up from front desk to body contour/post-op specialist. Having Dr. Sukkar as my mentor has been amazing and incredibly valuable to not only my career but also my future goals.

Since then, I have become MLD certified, a CNA, Coolsculpting Technician, Cellfina Provider, CoolTone Technician, and Ultrasound certified. After years of working with post-op patients and trying different garment lines, I decided to put together what I know best—my two worlds: fashion and medical.

I truly love what I do. My goal is to make recovery easier and provide the suitable post-op garment for an ultimate result.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would be lying if I said it has been a smooth road. I have had to start over more than once. I have learned that in life sometimes our plans do not work out, or sometimes we simply make wrong decisions. But it is never too late to learn from your mistakes and start over. I have learned to never settle—whether it is in your personal life or career, it is never too late to pursue what makes you happy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Working for Dr.Sukkar has been a blessing. He has taught me so much; his mentoring has made me a (plastic surgery) post-op/body contour specialist. We have three doctors at our beautiful 20,000 square-foot facility. All liposuction patients come to me for their Manual Lymphatic Massages after surgery. My job requires assessing healing, seromas, hematomas and addressing them properly. My most recent accomplishment has been providing patients with our exclusive garments and binders. My ultrasound certification, specializing in abdominal wall fluid collection, definitely sets us apart. I take pride in my ability to help and educate patients. As a previous patient myself, I understand the importance of recovery for a great result. I enjoy helping patients feel better and assisting in any way I can during their recovery.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
As much as I love what I do… I love to travel and spend quality time with my family. Balancing work and life is a must.
