Life & Work with Sarah Prather of Mesa, Arizona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Prather.

Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello, fellow crafter! I’m Sarah, the one-woman creative behind SarahDeeCrochet.com. I’m a full-time mom of three boys, born and raised in the sun-soaked desert of Arizona, where I still live with my partner of nearly 20 years. Whether it’s crochet hooks or knitting needles, I always have something yarn-related in my hands.

My crochet journey began in 2014 as a simple pregnancy hobby, but after our youngest son was born in 2017, I embraced life as a stay-at-home mom and turned my passion for fiber arts into a full-time creative career. As my small business began to flourish, so did my imagination and love for design.

I strive to create modern yet timeless designs—pieces that feel both whimsical and meaningful. Each pattern is thoughtfully crafted to inspire you to bring warmth, comfort, and creativity into your home through your hands. Whether you’re building an heirloom-quality collection or making a heartfelt handmade gift, my goal is to help you create something truly special.

My favorite part of designing is connecting with you—the makers who bring these patterns to life. It means the world to see your unique interpretations and hear your stories. So don’t be shy—say hello, share your creations, and join me in spreading the joy of fiber arts!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a fiber artist, I’ve learned that growth is both a creative and personal journey. What started as a quiet hobby quickly grew into something that challenged and inspired me in ways I never expected. Turning a passion into a profession has opened so many doors — not just to design and create, but to connect, teach, and grow alongside a community of incredible makers who share the same love for yarn and creativity.

The joy of designing can sometimes get tangled with the pressure to stay relevant, original, and productive — especially in a world where algorithms move faster than inspiration.

Running a creative business has stretched me far beyond the craft itself. I’ve learned how to photograph my work, manage my time, and handle the “business” side of being an artist — all while keeping that spark of joy alive in every project. It’s not always easy to balance family, design, and the creative rhythm that keeps me going, but every challenge has taught me something new about patience, persistence, and purpose.

I try to see each stage of growth as another stitch in my story — imperfect, evolving, but full of heart. Every finished piece, every connection, and every lesson learned reminds me why I started creating in the first place: to bring warmth, joy, and a little bit of magic to others.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in amigurumi, and I’m passionate about designing patterns that appeal to both left and right-brained crafters. My patterns are written to balance structure and creativity — offering clear, logical instruction for those who love precision, while leaving room for imagination and personal touch for those who create intuitively.

I’m proud to be part of the Scheepjes Designer Collective, where I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate on exclusive projects like the Little Darling yarn launch. Working with Scheepjes to curate yarn and develop designs has been such a rewarding experience — it’s where my love for design and play really comes together.

What sets me apart, I think, is my focus on approachable designs with character and heart. I put a lot of energy into how each pattern reads, feels, and fits together — from stitch placement to personality. I love creating patterns that feel timeless but still modern, something you can treasure or gift with meaning.

More than anything, I’m proud of the community that’s grown around Sarah Dee Crochet. Seeing other makers interpret my designs, add their own flair, and share their creations is what keeps me inspired every single day.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice for anyone just starting out is: don’t compare yourself to others. It’s so easy to look around and feel like you’re behind, but you’re not — you’re exactly where you need to be in your craft. Everyone’s creative journey looks different, and that’s the beauty of it.

Stay with it, keep showing up, and watch the growth happen. Every stitch teaches you something, even the ones you have to pull out. Progress can feel slow sometimes, but it’s happening, and one day you’ll look back and realize how far you’ve come.

Most importantly, enjoy the process. Let yourself experiment, make mistakes, and find your rhythm. The joy is in the making, not in perfection, but in learning, creating, and seeing your hands bring something beautiful to life.
