Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayna Painter-Jones.
Hi Shayna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well, it started after COVID, I couldn’t get a job with my degree and ended up volunteering at the humane society, washing dogs, and I just fell in love. I quit my job and started working for a mobile grooming company, but figured out mobile just wasn’t for me. I decided grooming school was the best next step, so I went and toured a couple of them and landed in Golden Paws. Once I finished my grooming school hours, my dad helped me build the shop that I’ve been working in for about 5 years now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like starting a small business is never gonna be smooth sailing; some things break, like the water hose to the tub or a dryer that needs to be replaced when you don’t really have the money to do so. The hardest part for me, though, was building the clientele from the ground up. I think that word of mouth was the best thing that helped me along the way and I have a lot of people rooting for me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for the creative aspect of the job; I do a lot of creative grooming with dog dyes. My biggest accomplishment to date is making a dog look like a tiger! I use Opawz pet-safe dye and a creative eye to come up with the design and just watch it come to life on the dogs. It’s really magical and fun! So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The thing that matters most to me is the comfort of the dogs. I created a space that is calm and easygoing for pets to feel safe in. I don’t force a groom just because I can. I work with the dogs through their anxiety over the span of a few visits, and I think that’s all that matters in this industry. We have a motto in the grooming world: it’s humanity over vanity, and I live by that statement.
