Life & Work with Sophia Idahosa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Idahosa.

Hi Sophia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
In 2016, there was a need for representation and inclusivity in the beauty industry. Most cosmetic products were not catered to women of color, especially black women. Popular and essential products on the market weren’t made for us, but we found ways to manage and creatively make these products work for our hair and skin. Coloring, creating and styling hair weaves and wigs was a natural talent for me. Being self-taught, I wanted to share with others what I was discovering. While shine a light on products that needed exposure. My main goal when I started my youtube channel was to create tutorials that did not exist for black women. I was tired of searching and finding no representation. There was a handful of black creators in the industry at this time, and I knew I had so much to offer and add to this space. I created looks that inspired women and became a guide in the hair industry. I wore hair colors that were not normalized for black girls. While revealing the exact products that were available to us! My first videos went viral, quickly reaching millions of views because I provided content that was scarce at the time. Today you’ll find with the growth of social media; this issue is no longer. But fortunately, I’ve gained a loyal following of 750,000 + followers across my platforms and continue to inspire today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel a lot the things upcoming content creators may see as a challenge or struggle, I felt was a smooth road. For example, I did not own a camera or tripod until my 3rd year of doing youtube. I used my iPhone 3 on a laundry basket to record my most viral videos and grow the majority of my current following. But most starters feel they have to have the lights, camera, aesthetic, and know everything from the get-go. I’ve enjoyed taking my time. I used a pro editing software for the first time last year. Prior to that, I used iMovie on my phone. Whatever may have been seen as an obstacle, I used as an opportunity to only be more creative. And my skills have grown so much due to using whatever I had. Rather than struggling with the circumstantial challenges. The biggest challenge I phased was keeping up with the growth of my platform/audience. Adjusting to working on a more corporate level and continuing to maintain or raise the standard of my content. Staying relevant on social media isn’t easy, and I’m proud to still be thriving and growing nearly 8 years in the game!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Youtuber/Online Personality. I create content from videos to pictures, including ads in promotion for large companies. I’m known for my talent and strides in the Hair/Beauty Industry. I’m most proud of the impact I was able to make for black girls in the beauty industry. I feel something significant that sets me apart is my open pride for my faith in God. I include a bible verse at the beginning of every upload.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as achieving a life that you love.
