Life & Work with Stephanie Aku

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Aku.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a love for the art of makeup. When I went to Texas State in 2015, I found myself practicing new makeup skills and trends I had seen on YouTube on my closes friends. They saw the potential and encouraged me to keep practicing and look into making it a profession.

Fast-forward to 2017, I decided to take the leap of faith and start my professional makeup artist career. 5years later I’m still going strong, all thanks to the grace of God! 2021 was by far the best year I have experienced in my career, even in the midst of Covid. I was booked every weekend from February to December, I did over 10 weddings, and countless photoshoots.

I’m looking forward to 2022 to be an even bigger year! I plan on continuing to improve on my craft, meeting more amazing clientele, building my portfolio, and overall loving what I do!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Looking back there were countless times I wanted to just give up. I would convince myself that makeup artistry wasn’t for me. But every time God would remind me of the vision he gave me for this career and would always give me confirmations that I was on the right track. My family and friends were so supportive, they would give me words of affirmation to encourage me to keep going.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional Makeup artist based on the southwest side of Houston. I specialize in photo ready glam. Wedding and photography makeup being my what I am known for.

I am proud of my ability to connect with my client and curate a unique experience for them. I believe that make up is a powerful tool and I love to used to express the in and outward beauty of my clients.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be when my sisters, mom, and I went back to Nigeria for the summer. I was 10 or 11, and we spent over 2 months there. We spent time in Lagos and Abuja enjoying the scenery before heading to Owerri, Imo state where my family originates from. I learned so much in depth information and history about to Igbo culture and traditions and overall the Nigerian culture. Seeing so many of my relatives and being reconnected with my Grandma Roes were some of the happiest memories I have.
