Life & Work with Susanne Sanders of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susanne Sanders.

Hi Susanne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Mill Creek Tallow started with a need for something better. My husband struggled with skin issues from an autoimmune disease and we were hesitant with conventional treatments due to the side effects. After much trial and error we came across tallow and were impressed by the results we were experiencing. We were invited to a small business event and our products did very well. We then started doing local farmers markets and health and wellness type events. We now have an online store and ship nationwide.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle was learning about algorithms, social media, search engine optimizations and finding what works for us.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I source our ingredients as local as possible. We purchase our suet (fat from the internal organs) from a regenerative farm here in Texas. Using low and slow traditional methods, I carefully transform nutrient-rich suet into pure, clean tallow without harsh processing, just a mineral sea salt.

I use certified organic herbs, unrefined, cold-pressed oils and pure therapeutic grade essential oils to blend with our tallow.

No fillers, no synthetic fragrances and no toxic chemicals which is rampant in traditional skincare.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think taking risk is important as it lends itself to moving forward on different products and ideas. I started with a couple of blends and now I offer 5 whipped blends, tattoo balms, deodorant, lip balms, beard balms, shampoo bars, soaps and even a pet balm. Without taking risks, i would not have that many diverse products.

Pricing:

  • Whipped Blends ($15-$48)
  • Oversized Lip Balms $7.50
  • Pet Balm $28
  • Beard Balm $16
  • Soap and Shampoo Bars $10-$12
