Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatyana Martin.
Hi Tatyana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story of life in the United States of America
My name is Tatyana, and I am from Ukraine, a country that has been fighting for its independence for four years. Although I was born and raised in a family of immigrants from Russia, and my native language is Russian, I condemn Russia for invading another country, Ukraine. I wholeheartedly wish the Ukrainian people victory in this unjust war.
Now, a little about myself. My daughter and I came to the United States of America a little over 30 years ago. My first steps on this continent were in Houston. I arrived in January; in my homeland, it was winter, snowy and frosty, while in Houston, it was sunny and warm. And the air was filled with the scent of the sea. I felt as if I were at a resort. At first, I admired everything: the shops, the abundance of goods, the excellent highways, the respectful attitude, and welcoming smiles, even from strangers. You see a smile, and your lips stretch into one too, and this simple movement somehow warms your soul and makes you want to embrace the whole world.
Of course, I could write at length about my first impressions. Incidentally, I wrote and published a memoir, “The Story of One Family,” which, among other things, describes our arrival here. It’s easy to say, “I came to conquer this country.” But in reality, I had to go through a lot. Learn the language, learn to drive, and generally adapt to life in a different country. Moving from one city to another in your own country is already a challenge. And here it’s a different country! I compared it to the birth of a baby. But unlike a baby, who has time to explore the world gradually, I had a very tight deadline. I had to start from scratch. Despite my PhD, I had to work as a secretary, wash cars, and cashier at a supermarket. But I didn’t give up and, stubbornly, step by step, climbed up. First, I learned to speak to computers in an informal way. I studied computer graphics and taught it at college. Then I joined a large oil and gas company, first as a designer and later as an engineer. All these years, I continued to study; fortunately, it’s perfectly acceptable to attend college at any age. And even now, after retirement, I continue to learn. I recently completed a translation course and subsequently wrote several glossaries on medicine, law, and the oil and gas industry. These glossaries of terms have been written and published in three languages: English, Russian, and Ukrainian. I also tutor math and physics. In short, I continue to live a full life. A few years ago, my daughter and I opened a consulting company specializing in alternative health restoration methods. We offer a new method and devices that harness the body’s self-healing potential when provided with the necessary corrective information. Our company has a website where you can find complete information about this unique method. (www.houstonhealthrestorationcenter.com)
In conclusion, I want to say that it’s a blessing and a great fortune to have the opportunity to experience life in a completely different country. We live on the same planet, but life is organized differently across its many regions. Adapting to a different way of life is difficult; one must overcome a great deal, but all these difficulties are surmountable. Of course, all this is easier when you’re younger. With age, it becomes more difficult. Unfortunately, our bodies age, but the soul is ageless. We must not give in, never stop, and always move up the ladder of life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Very smooth road
