Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Schorre.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was artistic as a child. I grew up in Houston, TX watching all the PBS art shows like Bob Ross, Commander Mark and multiple others. My grandmother fostered that artistic need and let me draw and scribble on whatever was in grasping range. When I was in high school I took art and just simply loved all aspects of it. I have sculpted, painted, drew and learned a lot. Life happens though. I never went to college, nor was I classically trained. I never did get a chance to pursue my passion. I became a mother and I have helped my children foster their love for drawing and crafting. I am at a point in my life where now I have my own studio and have the time to paint and draw as much or as little as I would like! My husband, Daniel, and I opened Deckled Edge Art Company in 2024 after my husband watched me paint “Three Little Birds”. He declared that I must let all the world see my talent and that was that lol. I also have a small gallery that I display mine and other artists works!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Deckled Edge Art Company/Colonneh Gallery is still fairly new. We see a lot of interest from our community and try to be involved in activities as much as we can. I think that the hardest part is being an introvert but needing to be apart of the community and letting people in by seeing and purchasing my art.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am mainly a watercolor artist but love doing illustration as well. I use nature and my community/state history as my inspiration. Flowers, animals and historical sites have been my main subjects of late. I also love to paint greeting cards! I think I do some of my best work when I am focused on a specific holiday!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think that my open mind is the best quality that I have. I don’t follow rules that much when painting and drawing. I think artists and people get too caught up in “the rules” of art. Some of the best art in the world have no rules and never followed anyone.
