Life & Work with Tori Johnson of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Johnson.

Hi Tori, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Calypso’s Locker was born from a simple question I couldn’t stop asking myself while cleaning local beaches: How do I make a bigger impact than I can on my own? I realized that awareness alone wasn’t enough, that I needed something sustainable that could continuously fund conservation efforts and get conversations centered around conservation. So I began designing jewelry inspired by the sea, creating pieces people could wear every day while knowing their purchase was helping protect the coastline that inspired them.

What started as a way to fund beach cleanups quickly grew into something much larger. Through dozens of markets and events, I discovered that women weren’t just looking for jewelry – they were looking for pieces that made them feel beautiful, confident, and connected to something meaningful. Today, Calypso’s Locker has evolved into a coastal lifestyle brand centered around feminine, ocean-inspired jewelry that’s designed to be lived in.

While conservation will always be part of our foundation, my vision has expanded. I believe a small business has a responsibility to give back to the community that supports it. Beyond organizing beach cleanups, I’ve sponsored animal adoptions, contributed to local food banks, and continue looking for ways to serve both people and wildlife here on the Texas coast. As a Marine Corps veteran, giving back has always been part of who I am, and I hope to continue expanding that mission in the years ahead.

Looking back, Calypso’s Locker has become more than a jewelry company. It’s a reflection of everything I love – beautiful design, the ocean, community, and creating something with purpose. My goal is for every piece to feel like a little reminder of the sea, while also allowing our customers to become part of something bigger than a purchase. Every bracelet tells a story, and I’m incredibly grateful that so many women have chosen to make Calypso’s Locker part of theirs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. Like most small business owners, I’ve had seasons where I questioned everything. There have been financial challenges, slow sales, changing markets, and the constant balancing act of trying to wear every hat: from designer and photographer to accountant, marketer, customer service representative, and shipping department. It’s easy to look at a finished product and not realize how much work happens behind the scenes.

One of my biggest challenges has actually been learning that it’s okay for a business to evolve. Calypso’s Locker began as a conservation-first brand whose jewelry funded beach cleanups. Over time, I realized women were connecting just as deeply with the beauty, femininity, and escape that the jewelry represented. Allowing the brand to grow into a coastal lifestyle company while staying true to my original mission wasn’t always an easy decision, but it was the right one.

There have also been personal challenges. As a Marine Corps veteran, wife, and mother, I’ve had to learn how to build a business while still making room for family and community. There have been moments of burnout, self-doubt, and wondering if I was on the right path. But every obstacle has reinforced why I started in the first place.

I’ve learned that success isn’t about never struggling, instead it’s about continuing to move forward with integrity. Every challenge has made Calypso’s Locker stronger, more authentic, and more intentional. Looking back, I’m grateful for the difficult seasons because they shaped both me and the business into what we are today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Calypso’s Locker specializes in handcrafted, ocean-inspired jewelry that blends beauty with durability. Every collection is designed to capture the feeling of being by the sea with soft colors, luminous crystals, sea glass, pearls, and timeless pieces that women can actually live in. Our jewelry is made to be worn, not something that just sits in a jewelry box. It’s designed to become part of your everyday life.

What I’m probably best known for is creating jewelry with a story. Every collection has its own personality and inspiration, whether it’s named after a sea nymph or a piece of maritime folklore. I want every bracelet to feel like more than an accessory, I want it to feel like a keepsake that reminds someone of confidence, femininity, adventure, and a favorite place by the water.

What I’m most proud of is that Calypso’s Locker has never been just about selling products. From the beginning, it has been about creating something that gives back. The business was built to support beach cleanups, and while the brand has evolved into a feminine coastal lifestyle company, conservation and community service remain part of its heart. As a lifelong salt water fisherman and veteran, I believe success carries a responsibility to leave your community better than you found it.

I think what truly sets Calypso’s Locker apart is authenticity. I don’t chase trends or mass production. Every design begins with something that genuinely inspires me: the sea, mythology, coastal living, and the women who wear my jewelry. My goal isn’t simply to make beautiful accessories. It’s to create pieces that evoke a feeling. When someone wears Calypso’s Locker, I want them to feel a little more radiant, a little more confident, and reminded that beauty and purpose can exist together.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I hope people remember that every small purchase from a local business has the potential to create a ripple effect. Behind every handmade piece is a real person with a dream, a family, and a desire to make their community a little better than they found it.

Calypso’s Locker has always been about more than jewelry. It’s about celebrating the beauty of the ocean, encouraging women to embrace their own confidence and femininity, and proving that a business can be both beautiful and purposeful. If someone puts on one of my bracelets and feels a little more radiant, a little more connected to the sea, or simply smiles when they look at it, then I’ve accomplished exactly what I set out to do.

Above all, I’m incredibly grateful to every customer, every friend, every local business that has supported me, and to this community from the beginning and into the future. Calypso’s Locker wouldn’t exist without them, and I hope to spend many years giving back to the places that have given us so much.
