Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuchi Liu.
Hi Yuchi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Before I came to the United States, I was really not a confident person, not even as half as I am today. I was born and raised in China, and my family always support me with my choices, so I guess that’s why I have the opportunity to always think and decide on my own. Growing up in a conservative society, compared with the western countries of course, I always felt different but I wasn’t able to present myself as who I really am due to the society environment and my surroundings. But things have been changed drastically. I am really inspired by the culture, the diversity , and the society. In the US, people are not afraid of to be who they really are and people believe that everything is possible as long as you are passionate about your life and you have a dream. So here I am, I am guided to this place where I am comfortable with myself and I am ready to chase my dream in the next chapter of my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it wasn’t a smooth road. Like I said, as a person who was born and raised in China, being a member of the LGBTQ+ community was never an easy thing to talk about when I was a teenager, but people are more open-minded these days. So I didn’t have enough confidence to express my self and my creativity. I am always passionate about the fashion industry since I was 13 years old. But my parents was not a big fan of me taking fashion as a career. But it doesn’t really stop me from being creative. I always seek opportunities to do anything related to fashion. So I guess I am just not the type of person who gives up on passion easily.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mostly specialize in styling and photography. I think what sets me apart from other stylists is I style people based on their personality, because different clothes represent different personalities. The thing that makes me most proud of is that I had a chance to build up a connection with my favorite designer, Ludovic de Saint Sernin. He really inspires me and his work is true art to me, and it really tells you to appreciate and adore your own body.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Treat yourself as you deserved. You can never put anyone above yourself.
