Makia Golliday on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Makia Golliday. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Makia , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I would hire me. I would hire myself because I am a professional, personable, and punctual individual. I put my heart and soul into everything I do. I believe in client satisfaction and never want to leave them with regret when utilizing my services. I strive to maintain a respectful atmosphere from inquiry to execution and beyond. I do what I do because I love it, not because I want a quick dollar.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all! My name is Makia Golliday, affectionately known as Kia Rene’. I primarily work as a Coordinator II in Higher Education in addition to being a Creative, DJ, Event, and Music Curator. I am a second-generation DJ, starting with my dad’s company at just 11 years old. In my 15 years of experience, I’ve been a part of many exciting experiences, such as DJing at the Historic Eldorado Ballroom, the Ensemble Theatre, the Galveston Juneteenth Festival, the City of Galveston’s Juneteenth 160, and Texas State University’s KTSW 89.9, among many others. I am currently curating more events through my business, Palm Tree Princess Productions, and living out my dreams.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I believe the people pleaser in me has served its purpose and must now be released. I didn’t realize that’s what that was at the time, but I always paid close attention to the way I’ve made others feel while neglecting my own feelings. It has caused me to shrink my personality and passion to make others comfortable. I’ve since learned to tone this down, which has allowed me to be my full, authentic self and surround myself with those who value that. It’s not fully released, but I’ve grown in this area.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell younger Makia to ” Keep going and you’ll see how good it can get!” I didn’t always think I’d make it to 26, let alone to the experiences in my career I’ve had. God is good!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I believe my closest friends would say my relationships, faith, and experiences really matter to me. I know that one day we’ll no longer exist in this realm, so I must utilize my “dash” and make an impact. I value all these things as they make life worth living for me,

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop procrastinating and turn off my imposter syndrome. I’d go after everything I could ever think I’d want. I’d truly die happy and at peace.
