Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Um.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aaron. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was 7 years old and living in Korea when my parents decided to place me in Taekwondo because of my shy personality. I remember in the first couple classes of Taekwondo, the shouting intimidated me, but I very quickly fell in love with Martial Arts.
In my teenage years I moved from Korea to Spain, where I was challenged by facing a new life, language and people. In my early age of 18, I became a young instructor, and started teaching the USA military based area Taekwondo academy in Madrid. After graduation, I moved to the US, got married and had 3 beautiful children.
I had successful business, we were preparing for early retirement. However, in the year of 2008 with the US market crash and series of complications we lost the whole operation. Throughout the struggles I continued training in Taekwondo with my master (Master Seo) and even participated in the State Championship, National Championship & US open, and we both won many medals.
We then decided to launch our first Taekwondo school called Golden Dragon Taekwondo in Tulsa Oklahoma with Master Seo. We relocated to Houston, and faced family health issues for several years, and during that difficult time I grew in my faith and strength and learned about the true value of life through Christian faith.
After a long time of hardships, I experienced healing and restoration. One morning I realized that it was time for me to pursue what I truly loved -Taekwondo. So, we joyfully launched Golden Eagle Taekwondo.
The more time I spend working with our students, the more I can proudly say that this job daily impacts people’s lives in a positive way.
Nowadays, the new millennium generation presents many challenges in finding the right direction. Everything must be easy and fast, there are too many distractions, and people are too busy to see the true value of life. Golden Eagle teaches the beginning stages of a light belt color level where we focus on Respect, Confidence & Disciplines. We give more attention on these three principles than any kicking technique, and by the time students become green belts, I introduce more techniques such as responsibility, perseverance, responsibility, and leadership.
Golden Eagle TKD not only offers traditional methods, but we also have an Elite Team class that is 100% focused on competition training. Each class offers 1&1/2 – 2 hours of intense training for students willing to challenge themselves to become Junior Olympians. In the year of 2017 alone, we have participated in 5 national and international levels of Taekwondo Championships we brought close to 100 gold and silver medals.
We don’t entertain students, we teach real Martial Arts training that can change many lives. Our goal is not only gold medals, or Olympic titles, but to impact ordinary people’s lives so that they can all become life champions who never give up.
Our school quote is : “A Place Where A Boy Never Quits & Girl Never Gives Up!”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
An entire business loss, having a family member face cancer, loosing everything, reaching a breaking point- all challenges faced in our journey to our next chapter of our lives. No, things definitely have not been easy. But, I learned that because of these difficulties, we are better able to understand and appreciate the importance of having faith and the right people in our lives to help guide us through the all amazing journey that we call life.

What a wonderful story! I do not practice Taekwondo but do know Aaron Um personally, so I highly recommend his Martial Arts Academy. Aaron is a man of great moral character and integrity, so I can see how he would be an excellent teacher and mentor. Congratulations!
