Meet Abigail Moran of Spanish School 4Kids in Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Moran.

Abigail, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Spanish School 4Kids by a deep desire of sharing my culture and my Spanish language with other ethnicity groups. I was working with Houston Independent School District as a Teacher Specialist and I was ready to start something new and build my own future.

When I had my child Joshua I fully immersed him in the Spanish language and at school he learned English. I knew exactly what to do in order for other children to learn the Spanish language. So, the same strategy that I used with my son, I now use with my students. I never translate to my students, except when there is an emergency. Otherwise, they learn the Spanish language by being immersed in the language and using lots of manipulative s. This takes lots of love, practice and patience. But nothing is impossible! I love to see the hard work of our babies. That is when I realize that hard work pays off.

To me being working with my students is like a hobby and a dream that it has become a reality. I love what I do and love to see how my students learn a second or even third language. I truly believe that when a child learns a second or third language the doors for their future opens wide.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is not easy at all. It takes hard work, lots of patience and perseverance. It took Spanish School 4Kids about a year to start running and for me to really see that I was making a difference in the Heights community. The first struggle that I had when I started the business was having 3 students for about 4 months. It was hard to wait with patience for more students to come. I knew that I was doing my best and that all I needed to do was to keep doing what I was doing with my heart in my hand and the kids will come later. I ended my first year with about nine students.

Then, I was about to cancel the summer camps program because I only had 2 students. I decided to still offer the camps for about 2 weeks. I made the decision to offer camps because if I cancelled them, it would just delay people knowing about our program. I ended up doing seven weeks of camps because the parents and the kids were so excited with all the different activities we were doing with them. After camp, the business started growing.

I started the second year with full capacity and a waiting list of about 40 students. At the moment, I feel so blessed and just to know that I have a waiting list for the next 3 years make me smile and say to myself “I did it!”

Please tell us about Spanish School 4Kids.
My business is a Spanish Immersion school. I teach different ethnicity groups to learn Spanish as their second or third language. Spanish School 4Kids is not only a daycare, but a preschool that teaches Spanish through teaching the skills that students need to be ready for pre-K or kinder. We offer a warm environment were the kids feel safe, accepted and loved.

I am proud to be making a difference in the Heights community. I love my students, their parents and their family.

There is no other preschool in the Heights that offers the program that we offer at Spanish School 4Kids.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is playing hide and seek with my neighbor friends. That is the main reason I like to teach Spanish through playing lots of games with my students. I think this is the perfect way to keep my memories close to my heart and helps me stay young 🙂
