Today we’d like to introduce you to Adeja Simone.
Adeja, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story began about nine months ago. After years of being a pre-med student, I realized I wanted to be an entrepreneur. However, I couldn’t settle on what type of business I wanted start. Then, one hot day in July after a few cocktails and relentless brainstorming. It hit me! What does everyone need or want, what won’t I get tired of 15 years after launching, what makes me genuinely happy. SEX! I decided to start an erotica and lingerie business featuring assorted handcrafted sex toys, creamy soft leather bondage, and enthralling lingerie.
Once I laid down the basis of what I wanted to sell I began my research into this 23.7-billion-dollar business. Long nights of relentless research looking for the best products to sell and addition to where to find these products. My discoveries led me 8,312 miles away from Houston to the third largest city in china Guangzhou. Here I shopped adult markets, set meetings with manufactures, and became one step closer to my entrepreneurial dreams. In the months that followed I was able to make Lylyth a reality. Although I’m nowhere near my end goal, I’m very proud of how far I’ve came. Lylyth has been mentioned on numerous reputable blog sites, has added an event curating service, along with many new additions tailored to every consumers desires.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, there are struggles in everything one wants to pursue in life. However, maneuvering through these problems is what sets successful entrepreneurs and their businesses apart from the rest. From prolonged shipment times, balancing personal life and running a company, and the constant battle of always trying to grow and do better. There are days I feel like I want to hide under a rock and give up and then I have days where I feel like I can be bigger than Jeff Bezos. It’s definitely an emotional and psychological rollercoaster ride. But it’s my rollercoaster ride I may not be able to control every loop or drop, however I can control how I react to them. To be a successful entrepreneur you have to be an extreme narcissist, as crude as it sounds. If you don’t believe in you no one else will either.
Lylyth Erotica and Lingerie – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Founded in 2019, LyLyth’s name was derived from the ancient folklore that Lilith was the first woman, before Eve, to exist but she was more intelligent, rebellious, and had a better character than man, so she was punished and censured. Lilith was described as a dark spirit with an uncontrollable and dangerous sexuality, but also as a symbol of freedom and independence.
I (Adeja Simone’) am the Founder of Lylyth. Until the day I can afford to hire a CEO I work both in and on my business. I handle all the day to day duties, which include social media, packaging, emails, market research, etc. This company brings something new to Houston. There is not many if any black female owned erotica and lingerie businesses. I’m most proud of how far Lylyth has come in such a short period of time. Being mentioned with some of the greats in the Erotica and Lingerie world has been amazing and keeps my momentum extremely high. What sets Lylyth apart is all the different components of the brand. Lylyth sells sex toys, bondage, lingerie, features a sexual health blog, a mystery box filled with pleasurable goodies tailored to gender or couple, sexual cosmetics, and a Houston based event curating service (Lylyth”s Private Room).
What were you like growing up?
I was very outgoing as a child. I did everything there was to do. Looking back, how my mom managed to keep up with everything in addition to taking care of my three younger brothers was nothing short of a miracle! From choir and theater to basketball and swim, I was always doing something and held a high gpa while doing so. Although I participated in all these things, I would’ve considered myself a lone wolf. If sports, theater, and various clubs weren’t enough, I also held a job. I’ve been working since 16, securing my first job at a local grocery store. I’ve always enjoyed making my own money and never afraid to go after what I want when I wanted it. Having a hand in so many different sectors taught me so much and transformed me into a chameleon of sorts as I moved into adulthood.
