Today we’d like to introduce you to Adetomi Aleshinloye.
Adetomi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in Kaduna, Nigeria, until I turned 12 years old, I was the youngest of three daughters. My mother was a nurse and my father, a retired soldier who also taught at the university level. I grew up in a Christian family even though we were surrounded by Islam and other traditional, non-Christian belief systems. I remember always loving to sing in the choir at church. At 12, I moved to the U.S. and continued my education. I became a vocational nurse, got married to my amazing husband, Seyi Alesh, an incredible saxophonist and music teacher, and we’ve been blessed with two wonderful children, Isaac and Bella. Our family moved to Texas in 2014 from California, where I lived for 15 years and then we ended up in Houston shortly thereafter because we liked it more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, life certainly hasn’t always been easy. First of all, my family was never exactly wealthy. We were always comfortable and provided for due to God’s grace and the efforts of my very hardworking parents but I had humble beginnings in Nigeria. Moving to the U.S., my parents had to struggle with being apart for some years, my Dad in Nigeria and my mom in the U.S. just trying to work hard and care for our family. I was a “relatively smart kid from Africa,” according to some but I still faced some racism from peers and had my days of either dealing with being laughed at for my accent, being quiet or just acclimating to the American culture. In my adulthood, the loss of both my parents in the same year in 2018 due to health complications was definitely rough.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Well, as a musician, singer and songwriter, I create eclectic Christian music. My goal is to share the love and message of Jesus with people and encourage lives. I don’t like injustice and I hope my life and creative material uplift people. That goes for my writings as well since I’m a published author of two books so far. With songs, I’ve released six audio albums, and am currently working on the 7th, so I think what sets me apart is my drive to always create. I realize we all have limited time on this earth, so I want to put out as much as possible to make an impact while I’m here. I have a podcast titled B.O.W with Tomi Favored, which is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google podcasts, etc.
I do an annual free concert, also titled B.O.W, which stands for Bringing Our Worship. It brings great artists together for a time of spontaneous worship with as many who want to come. (BOW as in bow down to someone; not like a curved stick for an arrow). As a Vocational nurse in my profession, I hope I’m always known for being hardworking and reliable.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Well, I think I’d have invested more. Financially, I’d have made better decisions and saved more. I’d have gotten acquainted with the stock market, investing at a young age and taking advantage of dollar-cost averaging or compounding. I’d have gotten into less little debt here and there… been wiser about my relationships and not been so concerned about what others thought of me so I could focus on doing the things I actually wanted to do.
