Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Gantt.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve loved people and hair ever since I can remember. As a child, my idea of playing with dolls was cutting, styling and braiding their hair. Fast forward 13 or so years, I’m 18 years old, and it was time for me to make a decision about my career. Hairstylist or Accountant? Out of fear, I chose to be an Accountant because I knew I would be able to find a job anywhere and in any industry at any time. Every company needs an accountant, right? Skip forward 18 years, I’m married, an accountant, and diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Through prayer, the help and support of my husband, family, church family and my faith, I am not just a cancer survivor but a life thriver!! It was now time to pursue what was really in my heart to do…go to cosmetology school!! I started Paul Mitchell the School Houston in the summer of 2017, graduated in the fall of 2018 and was a licensed cosmetologist two weeks after graduation!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but I saw the hand of God the whole way through. The first hurdle was how I would pay for school without taking out a student loan? I had just finished cancer treatments months before and wasn’t working. I spoke with a former manager who mentioned they needed help at her job, so I was hired as a contract employee! My schedule was flexible so I could work three days and go to school the other two (class was all day Thursday, Friday and Saturday). Then, the school changed the schedule so Saturdays were no longer available, which interfered with my work schedule, so I had to switch from day school to night school (Monday – Thursday). At the same time, I was afforded the opportunity to be full time 30 hours at my job; so it was an exhausting schedule, but worth it! Once I finished school, I was able to start my own business in a salon suite!!
Shear Dominion Salon & Spa – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in precision cuts and color – all textures welcome (straight, wavy, curly or super curly)! It is very important to me that my clients understand how to take care of their hair in between appointments. It’s like a saying we have in the beauty industry: “In haircutting, it’s not what you cut off that matters. It’s what you leave that counts!” I apply the same idea when it comes to everyone understanding how to care for their hair on a day to day basis. Healthy hair should be ‘Hair Goals’ for everyone. After all, your hair is the accessory that you wear every single day! I use top of the line products in the salon because people spend their hard-earned money to get their hair done. They can go to any other stylist, but they chose to come see me. That means a lot, so I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to protect the integrity of their hair…especially when performing color services.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In my opinion, success is doing what you love. When you do what you love…what you find joy in, you’ll never work a day in your life!!
