Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Johnson.
Hi Adrian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
The Scoop began as a simple idea that turned into filling a void for water ice in Houston. Years prior to starting The Scoop, we use to visit my aunt just north of Houston, who owns a snow cone shack, where we worked and gained knowledge about snow cones and the business in general. During this time, we lived in between Orlando and Houston, where Italian ice, or as Philadelphians call it, “water ice,” is king. After making the permanent move to Houston, we considered opening a snow cone shack several times, but either the timing wasn’t right, or life was in the way. Then, one day, the Light went off, and the Idea came about from a simple post from a friend who loves water ice. From that point, we invested our time into researching more about water ice and its origins. While investing and preparing to make our debut Houston we had to come up with a name for the company. The Scoop name came about after a car ride home from dinner while throwing around different words and slogans. The Scoop was the one that stuck, and thus came the name The Scoop.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it has been a smooth transition; with anything, there are always obstacles. The biggest obstacle has been introducing water ice to Houston. To overcome this obstacle, we give out samples to our customers who are unfamiliar with our product. Once they try our product, they’re always sold.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My wife and I are in new home construction. We specialize in residential building. We are known for building luxury homes big and small in the inner loop and the suburbs. We are proud to be young black entrepreneurs who have set goals and are accomplishing them by managing daily careers along with our business. What sets us apart from others is not only our experience in real estate and sales; we also bring personality and great energy. The compliment we hear the most “we love your energy.” We want our customer to be a part of our growth and not just a transaction.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
We always get the question from our customers, “I bet you eat this every day”? Surprisingly, we only indulge once a week or so. Although we love our product, we have to have some kind of self-restraint!
