Meet Adrian Rodriguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Rodriguez.

Hi Adrian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started by collecting bones from the Houston zoos swap shop. This bone collection eventually expanded to me collecting all manners of taxidermy. During the pandemic, I was looking for something to do and turned to my taxidermy collection for inspiration. From there I started to pin insects and eventually worked my way up to doing full taxidermy on top of specimen preservation and oddity resale.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, it has been pretty smooth, my parents have been externally supportive everything considered. The one main issue (and it’s not much of an issue to me honest) I’d getting specimens to me in the Texas heat. To avoid spoilage I buy most of my raw inventory in the winter.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently a full time student at kinder HSPVA. I am in the visual art department and work mainly with digital art and sculpture. My personal artistic practice is a mixture of taxidermy and my cultural identity as a Puerto Rican. Although I do go to an art school, I am looking to further pursue the sciences as my career and go into veterinary medicine. I am also currently interested in possibly pursuing a career in plastic surgery specializing in transgender care as I am a transgendered male and would like to eventually help others like myself out.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Being happy with yourself and your accomplishments.
