Meet Adrienne Brown of Houston Relationship Therapy in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Brown.

Adrienne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in Missouri City TX, I always knew I wanted to help people. My personality allowed for people of all walks of life to gravitate toward me and I always welcomed it. Starting college, I was a nursing major at Prairie View A&M University shortly after I became a single mother halfway through school. As I continued to pursue nursing with my various trials and tribulations involving breaks from school, second child, failures and financial instability, I decided to put my plan B into fruition which was become a therapist. Going through the process of applying for graduate school, I did extensive research on specializations I could pursue in therapy instead of being a general practitioner. I wanted to provide more that could be relatable and combine an approach that every human being experience and at times face issues with. And of course, I came across sex therapy which I found to meet all aspects in what I was looking for regarding gaining knowledge, personal interest and a major need in the community. As I researched, there were a few sex therapists in the Houston area you could count on one hand. And I knew this is what I wanted to do and to my surprise, none looked like me or shared my cultural and ethnic background which was even more intriguing. As time went on, I spoke with a couple of sex therapists for more insight about the field, I went through and finished school working at various places all while saving money to pay myself through school for my sex therapy certification. This experience has been an amazing one and I truly love what I do and call it my “enjoyment” rather than “employment” because I love every bit of it. My hope is to help and provide services to individuals especially of the African American community to educate that sexual health and function is not a taboo topic and should be openly discussed. It’s just as important as mental and physical health.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has not been smooth at all. Lol, Some struggles I faced along the way were becoming a single parent while doing full time work and full-time school all at once while trying to maintain my personal life as well. Throughout this process, I struggled financially, struggled with the ongoing thought if I was in the right field of work because others believed this field is not a lucrative one, time management, stress management, being turned down from jobs and a failed relationship that was very toxic. However, I overcame everything by persevering and having confidence in myself that I was going to succeed even if others didn’t think I would as a single parent especially in the field of sex therapy. I spoke with so many people that spoke negative about the field, but I just laughed because I knew I was putting myself in the perfect position and I was onto something big they had no clue about. I have a good heart that’s genuine, honest and loving. It only takes that one person to believe in you and take the time to see and get to know you. My struggles are also my strengths.

Please tell us about Houston Relationship Therapy.
I currently work for Houston Relationship Therapy, where I specialize in sex therapy for couples and individuals. Sex therapy entails assisting people that suffer from intimacy issues, medical issues that interfere with sexual function, sexual dysfunctions in men and woman getting, maintaining orgasms and erections, and past traumas that interfere with intimacy amongst a whole umbrella of other things. I’m very proud that I’m here because I work with a well-educated group of ladies who is led by the practice owner Dr. Viviana Coles who is also an expert on Married at First sight TV series on Lifetime. I feel honored to have the opportunity to work with her. She took the time to see me for me and my personality and what I can provide to our clients and I will always appreciate that. I believe the one trait that sets me apart is I view myself as more of an unorthodox therapist which allows a lot of people to relate to me so much more and easier to build rapport with and gain trust.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think I would have gone into therapy sooner than I did. I waited several years before I pursued a degree in counseling because I was so focused on nursing to the point it was more of trying to prove others wrong and appease everyone else’s wants for me instead of myself. Don’t get me wrong I really wanted to do nursing, but I think that passion for achieving that goal for myself was lost long after I keep pursuing it.
