Today we’d like to introduce you to AJ “InCanasous” Johnson.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a music producer, on-air radio personality, and branding/promotions strategist.
I actual found music by chance. When I graduated elementary you either had to sing or play an instrument —I picked the bass. After performing those four songs, I fell in love with music.
I was in a small jazz combo band all throughout high school and was featured at jazz festivals, events, and television (WGN).
When I went to college, I cofounded INS Productions with my friend turned brother Sparks. We hosted a radio show, promoted parties/events, developed several brands.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, absolutely not. (Laughs) What we were doing worked very well in college. But when we took that to Chicago from the college town of DeKalb it was a constant struggle and I actually quit. What got me back to music production is getting laid off. It‘s also what brought me to Houston.
Please tell us about INS Productions.
What I do ultimately is I give people and artists their voice.
It’s the reason why the logo is a mic. And the mission has always been “What sparks your ability”.
What I’m most proud of is developing and working with new and indie artists. They have a light that’s different than established artists and are much more coachable in the studio in my experience.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Man if it could start over, I would have made it so that I never straddled the fence in corporate America.
