Today we’d like to introduce you to Akil Williams.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Akil. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Started blogging for Elite Insiders in 2014 which is a sports and Entertainment website. Wrote a few stories that had gained a lot of attention at the time and after that, I took journalism seriously.
Then I went on to Texas Southern in the fall of 14 and started interning at the Houston Sun newspaper covering UH football and Texas Southern football. After that, went on to KTSU radio station and joined and learned from Larry “Chattabox” Hale until 2016 producing football and basketball games and had my own pregame and postgame and halftime show on the air.
During that time, I also interned at KCOH radio station and learned from Ralph Cooper and was reporting the latest sports stories. And in June of 2016, me and Robert Harris Jr got a sports radio show there called “The Locker Room” which was aired every Saturday at 9 am, and the show started off as a swac sports show but later turned into just the latest sports stories and topics.
And in March of 2017 I went to Espn radio and was interning there, and then in July I decided to get my own podcast there and here I am now
Has it been a smooth road?
Not a smooth road at all. High school was a living hell for me. Was a talented basketball player but could never stay on the court due to failing classes. Failed off the team three of my four years. Stayed on the team my senior year but underachieved big time. Had a 1.4 GPA, was 212 out of 217 in my senior class, didn’t walk, got my diploma late.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I have a podcast at Espn radio. What set me apart from a lot of people is my Podcast is one of a kind. My source of people I know is a long list. People always knew me for sports but once I started getting the type of guests I was getting on my show then people started to take me more serious, and it showed how versatile I am. And I think people look at my podcast as the forefront in the city of Houston
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like most is the endless amount of opportunities in this city. It’s a wide-open Lane for people that wanna do radio in Houston. What I least like is the humidity and the club scenes. Going out to clubs is cool, but I’m not really a club guy.
I would be if there were more dance spaces. It’s nothing but sections. It’s nothing against the promoters or anything, but I wish it was more urban clubs that had more spaces to dance but instead, were piled up in sections. Hopefully one day it’ll change
