Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Gonzalez.
Alex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas. After high school, I attended the University of Texas at San Antonio, where I studied international business and played on the club soccer team. When I graduated, I honestly wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. The recession was hitting its stride, so good jobs were hard to come by. But, at the time, my brother was in law school, and he convinced me to consider it. So, I took the LSAT and enrolled at South Texas College of Law Houston. During law school, I was very involved in mock trial and debate and dreamed of being in the courtroom, so after I passed the bar, I began to work as a litigation attorney. I soon realized that my true calling was fighting on behalf of people who had been catastrophically hurt in some sort of accident. I truly love being a personal injury attorney, and I’m fortunate to do what I do.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road to becoming an attorney has not been an easy one. Law school pushed me to my limits almost daily, and there were so many times that I doubted myself. Fortunately, I have an incredible support system of friends and family that I relied on and gave me the support and encouragement that I needed to keep going. The practice of law itself can also be incredibly demanding and stressful. You’re handling very important issues while also juggling multiple deadlines, client expectations, and occasionally rude opposing counsel. I’ve learned to take care of myself by exercising, eating well, talking with a therapist, and having mentors that have provided guidance along the way.

What do you think about happiness?
That’s a complex question but I’ll try an answer as best I can. My work as a personal injury attorney brings me personal satisfaction and makes me feel like I’m making a positive difference in the lives of my clients. As a friend, I get genuine joy out of connecting people who can mutually benefit from knowing each other and also from mentoring young attorneys and law students. I genuinely love to see my friends succeed. Finally, as an everyday person, I am truly happy when I’m with my family. It could be something as simple as hosting a family barbecue with my nephews and nieces running around, but quality family time like that makes me happy.
