Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfonso Cavazos.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alfonso. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was eleven years old, I started making small pirate knives out of nails to play with. I have always had the desire to learn how to make knives but I never had the time or resources to do it. About eighteen years ago, I decided to start learning how to make knives as a hobby. I would make the blade, handle and sheath by hand for friends and family and give them away as gifts. I used that time to learn about the chemistry of steel, what makes a high-quality knife and how to heat treat blades. After years of giving them away, I decided I should start to sell my knives and see what others thought about my work.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any small business, it has not been a smooth road. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. It was really tough for me initially to have the confidence to sell my knives at a fair price. Each knife is unique and takes hours to make. One of my struggles has actually been believing in myself and my skill as a knife maker enough to know that my knives are just as good as any other custom knife on the market.
Cavazos Custom Knives – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Cavazos Custom Knives specializes in making custom knives which includes hunting, kitchen and survival knives. All knives are handmade by me in my garage. Each knife is unique – no two are the same. I can create a knife for any specific need but I am most known for hunting knives. What sets me apart from others is that I create unique knives by using materials with a history. I collect wood on my hunting trips to be used as handles. I recycle items such as sawmill blades, old lift springs and old tractor plows which I use to make durable blades.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far has been when I attended the Hunters Extravaganza show last year for the first time as a vendor. It was the first official show I sold my knives at. I was able to see how the customers responded to my product and get their feedback which was a really cool moment. I also sold a lot more knives than I expected.
