Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfredo Montenegro.
Alfredo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved art. I had been in love with shapes and color since I can remember. I wanted to be an Artist when I was younger. My parents did not believe it was a reliable profession and sent me to study industrial engineering. After four years, I couldn’t keep studying something my heart was not into. So, I left to study graphic Art and design, it was a good career and involved Art. I studied at Instituto Peruano de Publicidad and graduated top of my class.
After graduating it was difficult, life in Lima Peru at that time was very hard. I left to the USA in 2000 and came to Texas. I fell in love with the US and made it my home. I had friends and family here that knew I was an artist and asked me to paint murals for them. That is where I began, I understood that this could be a good place to make a living doing what I loved. I worked briefly for a decorative design company, where I learned more about murals and decorative art. Then, after a while, I left to start my own company.
I worked many years doing everything on my own, now I have the help of my wife Vera, she started with helping me with phone calls, emails, and scheduling. My wife is also talented in art and with my guidance and knowledge, she has learned more and is now helping me paint murals.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was hard in the beginning, I was a new Muralist that people did not know me. I had to work very hard for many years to get my name out there. Eventually, through word of mouth and advertising my company grew.

My company is a Mural and Decorative finish company and I do commission work on canvas., for residential and commercial. I specialize in Art and Murals and I am known for my mural work,
I am proud that my company is well known in Houston, through hard work and perseverance.
What I believe sets me apart is that I hand paint every mural by brush and most of my work is custom. I only use the primary colors along with black and white and mix to get the colors I need as I paint my murals. I don’t use projectors or grids. I just draw and paint everything free hand. Through the years, I developed speed that allows me to finish projects quickly as client sometimes request.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is the four biggest city in the USA. Through the years of experience, I would definitely recommend this beautiful city. The diversity of culture is part of the answer of that demand for art in my opinion; however, to improve it, art shows and more artwork around the city will benefit its look and its arts demand.
