Meet Alicia Bean of Oh So Sweet Scrubs in Southeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Bean.

Alicia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a Houston native, born and somewhat raised. When I was about three years old my family left Houston and relocated to New Orleans, LA. We lived there until I was ten, then relocated back to Houston, where I would grow up on the south side of town. Fast forward to my college years I went off to Prairie View A&M University, and briefly decided I wanted to be closer to home. In the Summer of 2003 I enrolled at Texas Southern University, where I would go and complete my Bachelors of Arts Degree in Telecommunications in 2007. I was unfortunate to start a career in my chosen field due to the recession at the time, so I continued to work in the retail industry. After years of being in retail I wanted to do something that bought me joy and excitement. I decided to make a career change, which led me into healthcare. Healthcare for me is more than a job, it’s a calling. To be able to care for others is truly special and rewarding in it’s own way. Determined to better myself, and wanting to build and create something I could call my own and possibly leave for my family I decided to start a business. Throughout the years, I’ve made handcrafted natural body products for my personal use and have gotten amazing results with my skincare regimen. I’ve received many compliments on how healthy my skin looks, and I’ve always been asked what products I was currently using. When I would tell people I make my own skincare products it would simply amaze them. I believe it’s extremely important to have healthy skin and to pamper yourself on a regular basis. Using a handcrafted natural skincare product is very beneficial and it also helps support small local businesses. This past Mother’s Day I wanted every special woman in my life to walk away with something she could use to pamper herself, that was natural, and that was made with genuine love. I soon realized I had a special gift to share with so many people, that could bring them joy in a special way. That gave birth to Oh So Sweet Scrubs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I can definitely say I’ve been faced with many detours, loss, and challenges along the way. I’ve had countless doors shut in my face in both my professional and personal life. I’ve struggled with insecurity and self-esteem issues, but through it all, my faith and belief in God has strengthened me to the strong confident woman I am today. I’ve learned to appreciate and enjoy all that life has to offer, by staying grounded with my roots and always following my heart.

Oh So Sweet Scrubs is a handcrafted body sugar scrubs business that naturally exfoliates, moisturizes, and hydrates your skin. The purpose of using an Oh So Sweet Scrub is to remove all the dead skin cells off your body and to have healthy and smooth skin afterwards. It’s about pampering yourself and caring for the skin you’re in.

I specialize in handcrafted natural body products: Body Sugar Scrubs, Lip Scrubs/Balms I’ve created an amazing 2 in 1 Shaving/Body Butter, Bath Salts, and Bath Fizz Treats.  All of the products are chemical free and made to order in small batches.

What’s sets me apart from others is I’ve started from humble beginnings, being able to start something so new and different is like a dream come true. My goal is to share the joy and beauty of these handcrafted natural body products. I would like for everyone who experiences my products to feel good about themselves inside and out, and have that Oh So Sweet skin afterwards.  It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to look back at where I’ve come from to now. I started making these products to achieve healthier skin by pampering myself, and to now be able to share my story, gifts and talents with other people I’m more than thankful and grateful.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was an introvert, shy, and quiet, but very observant. I had a great sense of humor, goofy at times which landed me in trouble in class. In middle school I was a typical rebellious teenager. I found myself in one sticky situation after another. In eight grade right before the end of the school year, my partner in crime and I decided to prank call our reading teacher. That resulted in us being banned from attending all eight grade activities. It wasn’t until entering high school that I turned over a new leaf and stayed out of trouble. In doing so I grew up and focused my attention on becoming a good person that showed love and compassion for others.

My interest is the love I have for my family, friends, and true self-care.
