Meet Alisha Hicks of Heritage Haven in The Woodlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Hicks.

Alisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up between farmers in Oregon and a homesteading family in Alaska I learned at an early age the importance of hard work and dedication. Playing in the dirt was not just a fun child thing to do on summer days. It was our way of life. My grandmother and mother raised much of our food in a garden. Meanwhile, my grandfather and father raised large amounts of crops and raised cattle.

We homeschooled, we worked, we hauled countless cords of wood and buckets of feed. When we got sick, our nurturing was a mixture of our dad’s Native American medicine, mothers herbs, and our nature path uncle that kept tabs on us all! It was an interesting way to grow. Our childhood made us appreciative; appreciative as simple things like having running water after spending many years homesteading in Alaska with an outhouse and a fireplace we would take turns stocking through the night. Our childhood also made us survivors; we learned there is always an answer, sometimes you just have to work a little harder to find that answer. But at the end of everyday there was beauty and enjoyment in your accomplishments, and in the world around you that is abundant in earthly gifts. Sometimes that gift was a three-legged bear clearing your favorite swimming hole of salmon running through!

Now a mom of four, keeping a germ free home is a must. We live in a fast pace world where our children have work hard everyday to stand out above the rest and change the stars for themselves. My goal as a mother is to give them every tool they need to do so; that includes good health. My second daughter was born with a midwifery in waterbirth… she made sure to enter this world in the most unique way possible which is a true testimony to her personality to this day. She was born just after midnight in Alaska with the amniotic sac still intact. After the midwives broke the sac around her we found that she was a maconium baby. She spent many night in a hospital trying to clear her lungs, but the damage was done. All through the years, I struggled with her as she would contract every respiratory ailment every year. When I finally went back to my roots and started treating her with the natural remedies, I was raised with, and the education passed down from my nature path uncle; my daughter all of a sudden was no longer needing western medicine, we weren’t having sick days continually. Over the years, I trained my home to be chemical-free, to use what the land gives us. As a whole, our home overcame many health issues.

Once my youngest daughter started school, I was that mom realizing that I had way too much time on my hands… I needed a project, I needed accomplishments. This is when Heritage Haven was born. It started as a small hobby to provide friends and family with herbs and remedies. I fell in love with Microgreens, and soon added micros to Heritage Haven. Growing up on the west coast where natural healing and living is the norm, and now being in Texas that has not completely accepted a holistic approach creates a stronger passion in me to introduce more and more amazing products through Heritage Haven. I love sharing studies and research with our audience. The biggest reward is not our success but seeing and hearing back from other moms when their babies are happy and healthy after using our wellness products. Heritage Haven offers front door delivery at no extra cost locally so that mothers don’t have to run sick kids out to source natural healing.

If you are not local, we will ship to your front door. We make all our remedies with local organic ingredients, and source our teas from their greatest growing environments. Making these choices fun for the kids is something I love to do! Holding tea party’s with flowering teas is always a hit! Teaching a jam class, or doing crafts creates pride in the kids as well when they learn to be self-sufficient and have a tangible item that they have created… that is one of my favorite moments in all of it! Because of this, Heritage Haven is working on opening up a plate form for kids sell their creations with 60% of their sale going straight into 529 college savings accounts for them to use towards bettering their lives in the future. We never want to stop growing or improving. A quality personal touch will always be our trademark.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle has been sharing education with our audience. Marking out the myths and giving and showing viable proof of our products benefits.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We at Heritage Haven offer wellness products for natural living. Specialize in a line Elderberry products, Microgreens, and herbs. We are especially known for our Elderberry. We use all organic ingredients, with added herbs for extra health benefits, and raw local unfiltered honey. We do not just offer syrup, we created our own recipe for Elderberry shortbread cookies. These elder cookies are made with almond flour, honey, bananas, and Elderberry jam creating a sugarless cookie that is also organic, non-gmo, gluten-free and keto-friendly! We make Elderberry tea, sealed kits to store in your pantry and make at home when needed, lozenges, suckers, and jam.

I think keeping the personal touch sets us apart. Treating every order big or small with the same respect. Handwritten notes, gift-wrapped products, custom orders, and personal delivery are just the main touches you will notice. We also follow up with our customers after delivery to make sure they are pleased that they are feeling better. We never want to leave anyone unsatisfied. As a company, I am most proud of being able to share the education and help other mothers out.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston and the surrounding metro area is full of growth! Especially for organic and natural as it is not yet very popular. Microgreens really are a local producer needed industry as they do not have a long shelf life for shipping out to grocery stores around the US. Currently, we offer Microgreens for sale singly, or by a monthly subscription. Every time we plant more crop thinking we will have extra, it sells out. The best way to acquire our Microgreens is by pre-ordering. So absolutely, there is growth potential here. The city would do good to offer microgreens in their farmers market WIC allowances. Microgreens are super dense in nutrients but are a tiny leaf instead of a full vegetable making it easier to get your daily vegetables in your kid’s diet.

Pricing:

  • Monthly Elderberry subscription, 16oz for $16.95 delivered.
  • Monthly Microgreens subscription, 14oz of your flavor selection for $35 delivered.
  • Herbs run between 4.99-14.99 per 16 servings.
