Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison West.
Alison, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My expertise in floral and landscape design is fueled by inspiring people and places. I initially started working for a commercial landscape company managing large installations in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Biloxi, Mississippi. Recently I explored Mexico City, studying green wall technology and the Via Verde. I find inspiration everywhere! Whether I’m in a Texas wildflower farm or walking the High Line in New York, I am constantly inspired and love sharing ideas and inspiration with my clients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely challenging, and fortunately I have several mentors and great industry support. I love learning and collaborating with architects, developers, designers, and homeowners.
One particularly challenging project involved creating a ten-foot-by-ten-foot vertical garden on the 20th floor balcony of a residential high-rise in Houston. The project had to be code compliant, designed for high wind and north-facing conditions. The client was delighted with the finished product, which was essentially a living work of art.
Cleveland’s Flowers & Gardens, LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We create effortless landscapes for our clients to enjoy. We carefully curate Native Texas plants that are low maintenance and heat-tolerant.
In addition to landscape, we also brandscape! For some clients, brandscaping is a corporate logo planted on the side of a business or restaurant. For other clients, it means extending their carefully cultivated “brand” from inside the home out into a beautiful garden.
For those who love entertaining, we custom design and rent vertical gardens for special events.
Bottom line, our innovative approach to landscaping always keeps our client’s needs and wants at the forefront of our design process.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Delighting my clients! All of my business is referral based and a referral is the highest compliment I receive. A real estate executive called me the other day and said, ” I heard you’re fun, easy to work with, and detail-driven”. I joked with her, and said we’d clearly met before.
