Meet Alyssa Morton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Morton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved to bake. When I was younger, I would ask for ways to help in the kitchen during the holidays. I think my mom realized that I was pretty good at making desserts and would randomly ask me to make sweets when she found something that sounded good to try out. I would jump right up and get working on it!

After graduating high school, I decided I wanted to pursue my passion of baking as a hobby. I took some cake decorating classes at my local craft store to learn some basic skills. I continued to bake here and there for my family and a few friends throughout the years as a hobby, using YouTube and Instagram as inspiration. My family always encouraged me to open my own business, but I would put it on hold for one reason or another. In 2019, I was a stay-at-home mom, thanks to my wonderful husband, with my daughter, almost 5 years old, and my son, 2 years old. I decided to take a chance and dive back into the baking world. I opened my Sweets by Freckles Facebook page, named after the nickname my husband gave me when we started dating, and have been overwhelmed by the amount of support and kindness of my clients, especially during COVID. My family has continued to be the biggest supporters and cheerleaders.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a stay-at-home mom of two, that is homeschooling as well, there have definitely been some challenges along the way. I have had to learn how to balance where I am needed and continue to work on it. With anything in life, I believe there are challenges, and those moments make you stronger. The reward of being a part of so many celebrations, milestones, and memories has helped the blood, sweat, and tears strengthen my passion for the art of baking.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in custom buttercream cakes from baby showers and birthdays to engagement parties and weddings. I am known for having a wide variety of flavor combinations. Looking for a simple vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, you got it! Would you rather a PB & J cake or a red velvet cookies & cream cake? I can do that too! From what my clients have pointed out to me, this is something that sets me apart from others.

I am also known for my decorated sugar cookies. I use buttercream instead of the more traditional hard royal icing to decorate my cookies. Because of this, and the touch of almond flavor in my sugar cookies, my clients have said that they stand out from others they have had.

I am most proud of the clients I have met along the way, and as their families grow through life, Sweets by Freckles continues to grow along with them in each celebration.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I don’t really believe in luck, whether that be good or bad. I rely on my faith to bring me into situations and navigate me through them.
