Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Torres.
Amanda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
How I started? Well, I feel like there are so many things that occurred in my life that got me to where I am now. I mean the things that happen through your life shape you to be the person you are now, that I truly believe. I have multiple passions and each one started from different points of my life. Growing up a shy, sheltered tomboy I was never into makeup. I was however, into creativity. I would play with my barbies and create this crazy fantasy world, like something you would see in movies or read in books. I think that got me to find love in movies and the effects that create a film. As for the hair and beauty aspect, I think that started from learning to love myself. I never had confidence in myself as a teenager. Over time, I slowly learned that I was beautiful inside and out, which was a big step for my journey because if I never learned that kind of love, I wouldnt want to give women and young girls the confidence to love themselves. Nowadays with this self-obsessive world, self-esteem isn’t there anymore. I want to be that light for women to see that they are beautiful and for them to gain that confidence. So doing their hair and makeup I tell them the things I think makes the beautiful from their faceshape to their eyes, maybe their skin complexion or their hair type. Knowing that I can make a women’s day makes myself feel like I am making a difference in the world. And at the same time, I love making monsters, painting faces and bodies and creating mayhem in film. The creative aspect in makeup brings out the best in me!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life is never a smooth road. I have had many struggles in life, but I would never change those struggles. Being shy and quiet, I got picked on a lot. I went through a heavy depression, gained a lot of weight and had serious self-esteem issues. I had an abusive relationship that went on and off for almost two years. Going through financial struggles and the loss of people who I thought were friends, and let’s not forget a dysfunctional family. Life has its ups and downs, but all of these things made me into a better person. Treating others with kindness has never left my heart. Even when I still struggle, I find the little things in life that make it wonderful.
Spooky.Makeup.Nerd – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a makeup artist and a hairstylist in training. I am assisting in a salon in Katy, learning the ways of a hairstylist while I do makeup when I am not doing hair. I specialize in creative makeup from body paint and face paint, as well as simple makeup looks. I am known for my strange makeup looks, and I am very proud of that. I still have so much more to learn as I want to one day work for film and television, but having these chances to do creative makeup, body/face paint, and work on mask designs while working towards my goal is very rewarding.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is when you think for a minute and look back at everything that has led you to this point. If you feel good about it, then that is success. When you get to that point in your life that you are truly happy at who you have become and what you have accomplished, you are successful.
