Meet Amber and Christopher Pedlar of Pedlar Cosmetic and Family Dentistry in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber and Christopher Pedlar.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We met in dental school in Houston and got married shortly after. Amber worked in public health for several years immediately after dental school treating patients that otherwise wouldn’t receive any dental care. Chris worked in a private practice setting and still teaches at the dental school in Houston once a week. We decided we wanted to open a practice in Katy because Chris grew up here and we really enjoy the sense of community here. We like that we see a lot of our patients around town with their families. With so many corporate dental offices opening in every corner, we wanted to offer an alternative. In our practice, we take our time with each patient to really listen to their oral health goals and create a plan together. Our patients will only see one of us and not a different doctor at every six month check-up.

Additionally, we go to a lot of extra training through out the year to keep up with technology and learn new skills. Ultimately, we want to be a practice that can provide care for the entire family without our patients bouncing around to other offices for specific needs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to business ownership is a bumpy one. We struggled to find an appropriate space to begin building. Once we settled on a piece of land, we struggled to negotiate an agreement due to certain aspects of the previous transfer of the land. Actually building on our land went uneventfully, which was nice! Getting our permits was the most frustrating part because we were so close to the end but couldn’t actually get the finish line. Being married and pregnant throughout the entire process caused additional stress, but, as they say, what doesn’t kill you (or make you kill each other!) makes you stronger. We definitely came out on the other end stronger than ever.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pedlar Cosmetic and Family Dentistry story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a family dental practice. We see patients starting at 6 months old. We are a general dental practice, meaning we perform all aspects of dentistry. We take a lot of courses throughout the year to improve our skills and learn new skills. Occasionally, there will be treatment needed that is beyond our skill level, at which point we will refer to very trusted specialists.

We are most proud of the way we treat our patients! We treat every patient the same as we would treat our family. We take great pride in our work and make sure it is done correctly. Our dental work lasts because we plan on our patient staying with us for life!

What sets us apart is that we have our names on our business! You know that when you come to our office, you will see either Amber or Chris Pedlar. We have alliances with specialists so that most of your treatment, if not all of it, can be completed in one place. We built our office with our patients’ comfort in mind. We want people to enjoy being in our office as much as possible.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We initially had our hearts set on a piece of land in another part of town. We had a hard time with negotiations. The seller backed out of a verbal commitment he had previously made so the deal fell apart. We were pretty down about losing that plot. Shortly after, the piece of land we ultimately ended up purchasing came available and was a much better situation for us as far as location, cost, and visibility. That initial set back ended up being a blessing.

During negotiations for our land, we hit a road block that stalled us for several months. We were very frustrated and almost backed out to look at other opportunities. During this time, we found out we were expecting our third child. The timing ended up working out perfectly giving us plenty of time between having the baby and opening our practice. I can’t say that was luck, so much as God’s timing.
