Meet Amy Anton of Kitchen Underground in Museum District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Anton.

Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I love to teach people how to cook and wanted to create an intimate experience where people come to my home and learn about food and ingredients and cooking, but we also get to talk about life, kids, jobs, travel… whatever is on people’s minds. We cook for about an hour and a half and then all eat together and learn about each other. I have found other cooks in Austin who embrace this same concept so we have classes in Houston and Austin.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s hard to always put yourself and your cooking out there – I do all my social media and food photography but it’s hard to not be intimidated by all the fabulous food blogs or not be sad that I don’t have as many likes and followers. I just try to keep my head down and do what I do – teach people how to cook good, simple, healthy food. I try not to stress if I am not posting every day. Social media can make you a slave. I have 3 kids and 2 dogs and a husband, so, if I don’t cook anything photo worthy on a particular day, there’s always tomorrow!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kitchen Underground – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We teach people how to cook. Sometimes it’s specialty classes like Cheese Making or Indian Dosas and sometimes it just how to get a healthy dinner on the table for your family in 30 minutes. It’s all fun and valuable. We are different than other cooking lessons as we hold our classes in our own homes so you get to have a more intimate setting and really hear about the recipes and ingredients and why they are important.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The wide diversity of food in Houston is amazing and totally inspiring! I love to eat something totally new and then go home and try to replicate it. I think our great city is getting crowded. The traffic has gotten bad recently.
