Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Johnson.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Pop & Frolic was started in 2021 after the birth of my first daughter Carmella.
I had been laid off during the start of the pandemic in 2020 and needed a creative outlet to bring myself and others joy. I started making balloon mosaics and garlands for friends and family as a hobby, they would post them on social media and I soon started to get requests from other people to make them for their celebrations too!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road to get where I am today. When I first started I didn’t know what I was doing but I knew I needed an outlet for myself. I didn’t know where to get professional balloons, how much to charge, or how to get my name out there. In November 2021 I found out I was pregnant with our second baby, I can remember being so excited but wondering if keeping Pop & Frolic going was going to be possible.
We soon found out the baby was extremely small and I would need to slow down, which is not something I am good at. Luckily, both my doctors were very supportive and I was able to work right up until the day before I gave birth. After Margot was born, it was very hard to manage two under two and the business. The business was very slow after I took a month off but I got right back to work getting content out there and hustling for bookings!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in creating one of a kind balloon garlands. I take the time to get to know my customers so I can make their vision come to life. I’m a very visual person, so I like to make mock-ups for most of my clients, I find it helps people see the vision I have in my head as well as lets me know if I’m thinking what they are thinking for the event. I take pride in finding the perfect balloon colors, which sometimes means driving an hour or getting them shipped in from New York.
I’m very proud of how far my work has come. I look back at the first couple of jobs I did and compare them to my stuff now and am so proud of my growth! I have been getting more and more into party planning, which is a whole new challenge to tackle. It brings me so much joy to see my clients’ faces after I’m done with the installation! I love getting all the little details down for them and sourcing the perfect items to really bring the event to life.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The biggest lesson I learned from Covid was if you want to do something, go do it! I was so apprehensive to start selling my balloon garlands and mosaics. What if no one bought them? What if they didn’t look good? At the end of the day, I wanted to be a good example for my daughter.
I wanted to show her that if you want to carve out a niche for yourself and do something that makes you happy, you can! You don’t have to have a typical 9-5 job to make money and be happy. Sometimes you need to take a leap of faith and bet on yourself!
