Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Sample.
Hi Amy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I first became interested in photography in 2012 while researching wedding photographers for my own wedding. I’ve always been artistic, and I realized photography was a way to capture a moment and transform it into a piece of art. After purchasing my first camera that same year, I began photographing couples and weddings, and quickly fell in love with the process of storytelling through images.
As time passed and I became a mother, my passion shifted toward capturing families and children. Watching my own children grow inspired me to freeze the little moments—personality, connection, and joy—that often pass too quickly. That journey has shaped the heart of my business today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been both smooth and challenging. I’ve always had a natural eye for capturing meaningful photographs, and producing true-to-color, natural images has always come easily to me. However, behind the scenes, the early years of building a business came with time-management challenges and learning to balance work and life.
Three years into my business, I experienced a profound personal loss when I lost one of my twins at birth. That season deeply affected my life and my work. Over time, that loss became a source of perspective and inspiration. It made me even more passionate about creating images that honor connection, emotion, and time. Those fleeting moments are truly priceless. Through my story, I’ve been fortunate to meet many clients who connect not just with my work, but with my heart behind it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My photography centers on capturing the sweet, simple, authentic moments shared within families. I have a special love for photographing children just as they are—full of expression, personality, and energy. Many families arrive worried their session won’t go well because of how their children behave, but I thrive in those moments. Real emotions and movement often create the most heartfelt photographs.
What I’m most proud of is when clients are genuinely surprised by how many beautiful, meaningful images come from what felt like a playful or imperfect session. To me, connection doesn’t always look like posed smiles—it’s laughter, messy hugs, a quiet glance, or small hands being held.
I want my work to tell a story. When families look back on their images years from now, I want them to remember how that season of life felt, and not just how it looked.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have had many mentors. From the start, I valued learning and growing from professionals. I took newborn workshops with Kristen Mackey and Amy McDaniel of Dewdrops Photography to learn newborn posing, lighting, and safety. They definitely helped to elevate my newborn photography. I have also worked with Krystal Sandefur, Naomi Hopkins, and Skye Edmonds– all photographers I admire.
I was also lucky enough to connect early on with Taryn Melgoza, of Taryn Melgoza Photography, who not only became a friend, but mentor. I have been blessed to share in my growth, experience, and challenges with her along the way!
