Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Keith.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in the beauty industry began nearly 15 years ago when I enrolled at the Aveda Institute. As a former motocross racer, I channeled my competitive spirit and artistic personality into the world of cosmetology, a craft I quickly fell in love with. After working in salons in Houston, my career took a major leap when I gained invaluable experience working in Los Angeles, where I had the opportunity to collaborate with celebrities and participate in live broadcast events. It was during this time that I honed my skills and discovered my niche in hairstyling and makeup.
Returning to my roots in Texas, I built my brand, specializing in hairstyling and makeup for special events, weddings, and commercial shoots. I now call Galveston Island home, and as the owner and lead stylist of Salty Skin + Hair, I feel like I’ve found my place. Galveston’s allure as a wedding destination has allowed me to continue doing what I love – helping others look and feel their best on their special day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To begin, the early days of my career were anything but smooth. The beauty industry had a fair share of gatekeeping, and my cosmetology school education barely scratched the surface of the business side. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic hit my business hard, essentially forcing me to start over from scratch.
However, this challenging period also sparked a transformation within our industry. Artists united, with the aid of social media, in a shared effort to disseminate knowledge and support one another. Some information was readily available, but a substantial portion required investment. I committed to self-improvement by enrolling in business courses, bridal courses, and delving into kit condensing.
As the world gradually reopened, it felt like a rebirth for the beauty industry. The adversity we faced led to a newfound resilience and a stronger sense of community among beauty professionals.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in two distinct areas: Bridal Makeup + Hairstyling and Men’s Grooming. When it comes to brides, my focus is on enhancing their natural beauty, ensuring they look like an elevated version of themselves. For those who seek that refined yet authentic bridal look, I’m the artist to turn to. My background in barbershops has honed my attention to detail and blending, making Men’s Grooming a service I genuinely enjoy and excel at.
I’ve earned a reputation for my meticulous approach, particularly in high-stress situations like weddings. Clients appreciate my ability to maintain composure and deliver outstanding results when it matters most. In addition, I’m recognized for offering comprehensive monthly beauty tips to my brides in the lead-up to their special day.
What sets me apart is the level of information and support I provide to my clients. Whether it’s detailed pricing breakdowns, preparation guides, or crafting wedding day timelines, I make sure my clients are well-informed and well-prepared for their important events. My commitment to going the extra mile is what I take immense pride in.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see our industry continuing to thrive and evolve. Weddings are a timeless tradition, and with new wedding venues opening in our area, the demand remains strong. Galveston’s ongoing development and increased tourism, including the addition of a cruise terminal, are driving growth in wedding bookings.
In addition to weddings, Galveston hosts attractions and events like Mardi Gras and numerous galas throughout the year, ensuring a steady flow of business, even during slower periods. I also maintain a diverse clientele in Houston and its surroundings, and I’m open to destination bookings, which expands my horizons. I foresee a promising future for our industry with a consistent flow of events, both locally and beyond.
