Meet Angeles Lopez of Friendswood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angeles Lopez

Hi Angeles, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started the way many makeup artists do—just a young girl fascinated by the world of beauty. From an early age, I loved experimenting with makeup, and as I got older, I began teaching myself new styles and techniques, first on myself and then on friends. That passion naturally evolved into building my own clientele.

One day, I decided to treat myself and have my makeup done by a local artist named Suzette Esquivel. At the time, she had already established a thriving beauty team called Hairspray and Highlight. As we caught up, one thing led to another, and she offered me the opportunity to join her team. That experience was a game changer, it allowed me to refine my artistry, expand my skill set, and gain invaluable insight into the wedding industry, which lead me to where i’am today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not, when you build something starting from zero, you will learn a bunch, and make a bunch of mistakes too, doesn’t matter what business you are in. One of the biggest challenges in the beauty industry, is inclusivity. When I first got into makeup, I only knew what worked for me. But as I started doing makeup for friends, I quickly realized that what worked for me wouldn’t necessarily work for them. That experience taught me the importance of understanding undertones, working on different skin types/concerns and having a diverse shade range to ensure I could cater to all clients.

Another challenge I faced was learning how to grow my business. Although I’m still working on different ways to improve, one of the biggest lessons has been understanding how to properly market myself. It’s an ongoing learning process, but I’ve made great improvement. I’m still in the early stages, and right now, I’m focused on taking it to the next level by obtaining my LLC and launching my website.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I actually juggle two full-time roles—I’m a marketing specialist Monday through Friday and a makeup artist on the weekends. I specialize in all types of special event makeup, from bridal and quinceañeras to photoshoots and more. I think I’m known for that effortlessly natural yet glamorous look. My goal is to enhance my clients’ natural beauty, helping them feel confident and radiant without masking their unique features. But hey, if they want a full beat, I can definitely do that too! lol

What I’m most proud of is the growth and confidence I’ve gained over the years. When I was just starting out, I would overthink everything, and even the slightest unsure glance from a client would make me second-guess myself. But I’ve learned that makeup is an easy fix, what really matters is open communication. As long as my client and I are on the same page, I can ensure they leave my chair feeling happy, confident, and beautiful.

A longtime client told me that what sets me apart is my ability to take an “inspo” picture and bring it to life in a way that still looks flawless, without feeling heavy or “cakey” on the skin.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Oh man, what a time to be alive! One interesting lesson I learned is that even during a pandemic, people will still get married! lol Of course, things slowed down for a while, but in a way, I appreciated that slower time. It gave me the chance to take a step back, refocus, and put more energy into creating fresh, creative content.
