Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Anith Pillai.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anith. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I opened Evolutionary Eye Care with my business partner, Dr. David Chau, at the beginning of 2016. We always had a plan of opening our own practice. We worked in other eye care practices, and wanted to have our own clinic, ran the way we saw fit. We wanted to provide a unique customer experience, with an emphasis on advanced technology. In addition to providing primary eye care to the local community, we wanted to be a referral source for more specialized eye care. I have a clinical emphasis in anterior segment disease including Keratoconus management, specialty contact lenses and myopia management including orthokeratology. Dr. Chau has a clinical emphasis in pediatric eye care, vision therapy, and low vision. We are both Optometric Glaucoma Specialists and had interest in opening a dry eye center to provide the most advance treatments for dry eye patients. With our background and passion for eye care, we thought opening our own practice would help us serve our community but also provide us with the practice modality that best suited us.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Opening a business, especially a cold start, is never an easy process. There are always bumps along the way. Many of the struggles included administrative issues, such as dealing with contractors, underwriting agents from banks, landlord, I can go on and on. We even had two break-ins within the first six months of opening! So there were a lot of struggles, but they were all worth it to see our practice form in the way we had always envisioned.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our practice’s emphasis is on a truly unique customer experience and providing the most advanced technology to our patients. The way that motto incorporates itself into our office is by having the forefront of diagnostic equipment, providing the latest treatment options, and offering the very best lens options. Myself and Dr. Chau do have our own clinical specialties as well. As I mentioned, I manage many anterior segment disease cases such as Keratoconus and post-surgical patients. These patients often can not achieve their desired vision with traditional glasses or contacts, thus more customized lens designs are needed. I also offer myopia management options for children and adolescents who’s vision is progressively getting worse. With revolutionary treatment options, like orthokeratology, we can help slow down their progression. My partner, Dr. David Chau, has a clinical emphasis in pediatric eye care, vision therapy, and low vision. Vision therapy helps improve the visual system in cases where glasses and contacts may not alleviate symptoms. Low vision is using different optical systems to help obtain functional vision in patients with severe vision loss from eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, or Retinitis Pigmentosa, to name a few.
What was you like growing up?
I was always a huge sport, fan, especially basketball. I am a die-hard Rockets fan. I went to the University of Texas at Austin for undergrad, so I am a die-hard Longhorn fan as well (Hook ’em!). Like most kids growing up, I wanted to be a pro-athlete like the ones we idolized growing up. Unfortunately, my skills on the basketball court did not match my passion :). In school, I always gravitated toward math and science. I in fact envisioned myself in an engineering field. However, as I got exposed to the medical field and patient care, my interests changed. It was actually at UT where I sparked my interest in Optometry. I was working at a local optometrist office, and as I learned more about the field, I fell in love with it.
