Meet Anne and Jules Green of Sweet 7 Bakery in Northwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne and Jules Green.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The bakery idea came about when I was just baking for my children and their events. Whenever there was a school event or a sporting event, I would make things like cookies with the sports teams logo on it or specialty cupcakes for band and dance events. After receiving a request for a large order for my stepson’s football homecoming event and seeing how the parents reacted to the cookies and cupcakes, my husband suggested that it was time to turn the bakery into a business. He felt like the amount of time and detail that I was putting into these requests deserved some kind of compensation.

Shortly after, Sweet 7 was created! The concept of Sweet 7 was conceived by taking the number of family members in our family (there is 7 of us total, myself, my husband, 3 daughters and 2 sons) and the fact that our target was making things tasty and ‘sweet’. My husband created a logo. Then we got all of the licensing needed to become a home bakery. We started at The Farmers’ Market on Grand Parkway in Katy, Texas. Our niche initially was our cake balls. This isn’t just any cake ball, but a special, secret recipe that set us apart from most other home bakers, who all typically make cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. We wanted to be unique and on top of that, make our business about the customer and be a true family owned/run a business. The Farmer’s Market exposure and simple word of mouth have been all we have needed to grow our brand and we have not looked back ever since.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. There have been plenty of bumps along the way. Things like not having total family participation, which is something I am sure all parents can attest to. Sometimes dealing with teenagers, and trying to instill a business sense into them has been a major challenge. Things like over-exhaustion from putting in too much work and wearing yourself out has been an issue. Disagreements on approaches to ideas, how much time should be dedicated to the bakery, and things of that nature have all been issues we have managed.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The things we specialize in first and foremost is being friendly, respectful, and professional. Before you ever make an order or taste any of our products, we will always be very customer oriented FIRST. As far as our products, our specialty product is the cake ball, which in itself has a large variety to choose from. The part that we love about making the cake balls, is that we all sit down and brainstorm different ideas before we create them, QC them and put them out for our customers. Once the customer likes a product, we have fortified the relationships with them by offering custom orders of their favorites items for their events which has created a consistency for the demand. And lastly, we never make the business about money… Money is the last thing that we factor in before making sure that we are happy and the customer is happy, and our product is the way we all expect it to be. Those are the things that set us apart.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Houston is a great city for our business. The sheer size of the city and also the variety of people has been a huge part of our success. If someone was starting out, I would recommend Houston as a startup location. One thing I would suggest is doing research into what specific area would be best. Houston is a great city, but it is a huge, spread out city, so finding where the greatest demand for your specific product would be a major challenge.
