

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anshwa Lewis.
Anshwa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I found my love for event planning just months before graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a degree in Systems Engineering. I volunteered to organize the Black History Program on campus that year and the program morphed into a full-scale production, I immediately found my passion for executing events. As an officer in the Army, I cultivated my event planning skills because part of my role was organizing balls, award ceremonies, general officer visits, parades and banquets for my units at Ft. Hood, TX. In my last year on Active Duty, I expanded my passion for event planning to include weddings while planning my wedding to my college sweetheart.
In 2013, I started SwaLaRue Events as a boutique event planning firm to help clients plan highly personalized experiences with a focus on corporate events to improve employee retention and morale as well as full-service wedding planning for busy professionals.
Has it been a smooth road?
Communicating with clients and understanding their needs has always been a passion for me. Helping guide the vision and execution for a corporate event and assisting brides and grooms with bringing their wedding dreams to fruition is always a fulfilling experience for me but being a business owner is equally important and understanding the finances and operations are where I’ve grown the most.
It certainly has not been a smooth road but a worthwhile journey these past seven years. Some of the biggest growing pains involved understanding marketing, overhead, sales and budgeting for a business.

SwaLaRue Events is a boutique event design and planning firm specializing in highly personalized experiences for corporate events and boss brides.
I’m known for very thorough execution with every event, paying attention to the small details and extremely professional customer service.
I am most proud of my team being able to service clients with a vast range of needs and budgets and what sets me apart is my ability to educate clients on all the ways they can elevate their occasion from event to an experience.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love about Houston is our melting pot of cultures and cuisines! I love traveling locally and abroad and I must say that no one can top our range of restaurants to try and the street I live on, no two households share the same cultural background. I know that isn’t the case in every neighborhood in Houston but it’s really cool to learn about each other’s heritage and Holidays we celebrate.
