Meet Arga Bourgeois of Sunshine’s Vegan and Health Store

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arga Bourgeois.

Hi Arga, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Opened in 1983 by Vergis Bourgeois JR (my father), better known as “Sunshine,” Sunshine’s was one of the first health food stores serving raw and cooked vegetarian dishes in Houston. Sunshine’s Health Food Store & Vegetarian Deli is a cozy neighborhood jewel nestled right across the way from University of Houston’s main campus. As the years went on, the clientele and business grew rapidly, which paved way for the opening of the second location. Although Mr. Sunshine is no longer with us, he has left a legacy for generation to come, starting with myself.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, not at all. The biggest struggle would be finances, including money for the business, the employees, and any other expense you could think of when owning a business or two.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Sunshine’s Vegan and Health Store?
We are a vegan restaurant and health store located in the greater OST area on Old Spanish Trail. We’ve been in business for 40 years and have two locations and one more in the making. We are known for our delicious and savory vegan meals. One of the things that sets us apart is there’s a little bit of everything here, from vegan burgers and nachos to vegan spaghetti and enchiladas plates, salads, wraps, desserts, juices, and much more all vegan, which draws people from all over the city in.

The brand itself has grown tremendously over the years and brought many returning and new customers to us. We hope to continue to grow and expand to the point Sunshine’s becomes a household name.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My personality and having a giving-spirit has made way for good business partnerships and even good personal relationships that last years and years.
